Team effort allows Scots to defeat NC Wesleyan 86-80

The Maryville College men's basketball team claimed their third consecutive victory with a thrilling 86-80 road win over North Carolina Wesleyan College on Friday evening in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.

 

In a streaky first half, Maryville jumped out to a 13-point advantage in the first seven minutes of the challenge. The Bishops battled back with 11 points on MC's nine first-half turnovers. The Bishops relied on a strong bench posting 21 of their 37 first half points from reserves. The Scots took a 39-37 lead into the intermission after MC finished with a 46% shooting effort while holding the Bishops to only a 36% success rate with their defense.

 

In the first ten minutes of the final period it looked like the Scots were going to run away with the key USA South battle. They out scored Wesleyan 26-9 making the score 65-46. The Bishops' Brandon Brown and John Edwards combined for 24 second-half points to close the gap, but it wasn't enough to surpass the Scots.

 

Maryville (12-3, 3-1 USA South) had ten players score on the evening. They were paced by four players with double-digit scoring. Jay Bowyer finished with 17 points on 4-of-6 shooting while dishing out four assists. Joshua Brooks added 16 points with Tyler Spicer tossing in 15. The Scots went 12-for-25 from long distance and Spicer went 5-for-6 from beyond the arc. Spencer Shoffner posted 11 points helping MC finish with a 45% shooting effort from the floor.

 

North Carolina Wesleyan (9-5, 2-1 USA South) had D.J. Weaver finish with 18 points while Brandon Brown and John Edwards each tallied 16 points.

 

Maryville will challenge William Peace University in Raleigh, North Carolina on Saturday afternoon.
