Box Score The Methodist University Monarchs out scored the Maryville College Scots 32-16 in the closing eight minutes to claim a hard fought USA South challenge by the score of 91-76 in MC's Boydson Baird Gymnasium on Friday evening.
Maryville took a 39-32 lead into the half with Spencer Shoffner and Logan Brewer each dropping a dozen points while the Scots collectively hit 45-percent of their shots from the floor. Maryville's defense forced 14 Methodist turnover while holding the Monarchs to a 37-percent shooting effort.
The Scots got in foul trouble early in the second half getting Methodist to the free throw line with 15-minutes left on the clock. The Monarch's adjusted and pounded the ball into the paint allowing them to shoot 19-for-28 (68-percent) in the final period.
In contrast, Maryville connected on only 12-of-37 shots (32-percent) while being out rebounded 23-16 in the closing half.
"You will have a hard time winning when you send a team to the line 39 times," stated Maryville College Head Coach Randy Lambert. Methodist finished the game 29-for-39 at the charity stripe and out hustled the Scots on the boards 48-28.
Methodist (7-11, 3-4 USA South) was paced by Brandon Monk's 30-point effort on 9-of-16 shooting. He was 12-for-16 from the free throw line. Tabias Hilliard deposited 22 points after hitting 7-of-10 shots. Mike Major added 16 points while grabbing a game-high 16 rebounds.
Maryville (12-6, 3-4 USA South) was led by Spencer Shoffner's 19 points on 7-of-17 shooting. Logan Brewer tallied 16 points in the paint on 5-percent shooting while leading the Scots with 10 rebounds. Jay Bowyer tossed in three treys to finish with a 15-point evening.
The Scots will look to rebound quickly as they host USA South foe Greensboro on Saturday evening with a 6:00 p.m. tip-off on Maryville's Randy Lambert Court.
