Box Score The Ferrum College Panthers snapped Maryville's three-game winning streak and moved the Scots to a 1-1 record in USA South play with an 83-74 win over MC in Ferrum, Virginia on Sunday afternoon.
Both teams battled to a 38-38 tie at the half with each team shooting over 48% from the floor. The Panthers claimed an early 19-11 battle on the boards with ten total lead changes in the first period.
The Scots took an early lead in the final period with Spencer Shoffner connecting on a three-pointer in MC's first possession. Following a pair of Colt Nokes free-throws, Ferrum went on a 7-2 run claiming a 56-52 advantage. The Panthers would score the next three baskets pulling away for a nine-point lead, 63-54. Each possession Maryville attempted a run, Ferrum answered with defensive rebounds and success at the free-throw line.
Despite a 19-point effort from senior Spencer Shoffner and a 14-point effort from senior Logan Brewer in the post, MC could not close the gap on their USA South host.
Ferrum (6-4, 1-0 USA South) had four players tally double digits in scoring. Alek Ayer paced all Panther scorers with 18 points while Josh Grimard added 17. Marvin Wilson tossed in 15 while Josh Dudley added a dozen. Rashawn Speas led all rebounders with 9. Ferrum finished the game out rebounding the Scots 43-27 after only an 8 rebound margin at the break.
Maryville (9-3, 1-1 USA South) saw Shoffner go 5-for-12 from the field and 8-for-12 from the free-throw line. Brewer was 6-for-8 from the floor while the Scots finished 26-for-58 (44%) from the floor. Emanualle Garcia deposited a pair of three-pointers for 10 points on the afternoon.
The Scots will look to rebound when they host LaGrange College on Saturday January 9th in the Boydson Baird Gymnasium. Tip-off is slated for 4:00 p.m.
