Box Score A four-run 11th inning capped a 22-hit performance to help Maryville College defeat Piedmont College 14-11 on Sunday evening in Demorest, Georgia. The victory helped the Scots claim the USA South three-game series and move to 10-3 on the season.
Maryville's Logan Jenkins paced the 22-hit onslaught going 4-for-7 with a pair of runs scored and two RBIs. A trio of Scots stroked three hits. Andrew Henry was 3-for-7 with three runs scored while Evan Ezell finished 3-for-5 and Clifton Dempsey went 3-for-6. Brendan Lawler, Johnny Carpenter, and Chris Ervin each tallied a pair of hits. Carpenter went yard in the 7th and Ervin drove in four runs, three on a bases clearing double in the 8th.
Leading 10-6 Maryville could not close the door in regulation. Piedmont took advantage of a pair of MC errors to plate four unearned runs to send the game into extra innings.
The Lions returned the favor in the 11th inning after Andrew Henry drove home Tyler Bigler with a single making the score 11-10. MC promptly tallied three unearned runs lifting their advantage to 14-10.
Piedmont rallied with a run-scoring double in the bottom of the 11th, but MC's Jerod Dickey closed the door with a pair of strikeouts to help the Scots go to 2-1 in USA South action.
Maryville used eight hurlers during the challenge with Austin Delozier earning the win with a pair of quality innings in relief. He allowed only one hit and one earned run.
Piedmont (7-4, 1-2 USA South) tallied 13 hits with five hitter recording a pair of hits each. Josh Thomas suffered the loss after 3.2 innings of relief on the mound. He allowed seven hits and seven runs, only four of the runs were earned.
The Scots (10-3, 2-1 USA South) will travel to Emory & Henry College on Wednesday for a 2:00 non-conference matchup before hosting USA South foe Covenant College for a three-game series on Friday and Saturday.
