The Maryville College baseball team opened the 2016 spring season dropping a double header in Memphis, Tennessee to the No. 11 Rhodes Lynx 4-0, 2-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Rhodes tallied an unearned run in the first inning when Zac Lange scored on an error by MC's Tyler Bigley. Scots' starter Seth Debity held the Lynx scoreless over the next three innings, but Rhodes put a pair on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth when Lange scored another unearned run before Levi Greenberg tripled scoring Bennett Notestine making the score 3-0. Rhodes tacked on an earned run off MC reliever Samuel Joiner in the seventh when Jackson Lourie singled to centerfield scoring Ryan Olive.
Maryville's five-hit attack was paced by sophomore catcher Evan Ezell. Ezell was 2-for-3 at the plate with Brendan Lawler, Chris Ervin, and Tyler Bigley collecting the remaining three hits for the Scots.
Rhodes' hurler Blake Glauben earned the win on the mound with seven innings of five-hit ball. He struck out eight Scots en route to his first win of the season.
MC's Seth Debity suffered the loss after five innings of five hit ball on the mound. The senior allowed only one earned run while striking out five Lynx.
In the nightcap, Rhodes' Daniel Morris won the dual with MC's Jeremy Ibarra on the hill. Morris threw a complete game (seven innings) surrendering only five hits while striking out four. Ibarra struck out five in his senior debut, allowing a pair of earned runs on six hits in five innings of work.
Rhodes lit up the scoreboard with a run in the second inning. Nick Bosma doubled to drive in Levi Greenberg giving the hosts a 1-0 advantage. The Lynx tacked on an insurance run in the sixth when Greenberg scored again off a Chris Winter RBI single to right field.
Andrew Henry and Jacob Frost collected four of the Scots' five hits. Henry, MC's centerfielder, went 2-for-4 while Frost, Maryville's backstop, went 2-for-2.
Maryville will look to get back on track on Sunday when the complete the three-game series with Rhodes at Stauffer Field. First-pitch is slated for 12:00 noon CST.
