Box Score The Maryville College baseball team used a seven-run surge in the top of the ninth inning to defeat No. 11 Rhodes College 13-10 on Sunday afternoon in Memphis, Tennessee.
The Scots' Joe Jones earned the victory on the hill after closing the game with a pair of standout innings, striking out three while allowing only three hits. Jones closed the door after five other MC hurlers surrendered 10 hits and seven earned runs.
After a pair of earlier games against the Lynx where MC was shutout in each challenge, the Scots' bats exploded to touch six Rhodes pitchers for 13 runs on 16 hits.
Maryville's Logan Jenkins, Johnny Carpenter, and Greg Vourloumis each recorded three hits on the afternoon with Carpenter, Chris Ervin, and Brendan Lawler each recording a pair of RBIs. Andrew Henry and Chris Ervin each added a pair of hits to bolster MC's offensive attack.
The Scots scored solo runs in the second, third, and fourth innings. Trailing 5-3 Maryville pushed three runs across the plate in the seventh when Chris Ervin drove in Andrew Henry on a sacrifice fly before MC plated a pair of unearned runs on Rhodes' miscues.
MC's 6-5 advantage was short lived when the Lynx added five runs to the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Maryville's seven-run game-winning rally in their final at-bat was fueled by key RBIs by Ervin, Dan Oaklief, Brendan Lawler, Tyler Bigley, and Johnny Carpenter.
The Scots (1-2) will now look to host Augsburg (MN) for a four-game series on Scotland Yard beginning on Friday. First pitch is slated for 1:00 for a double-header on Friday while Saturday's twinbill begins at noon.
