Box Score A pair of Brendan Lawler RBIs proved all that the Maryville College Scots would need after outstanding pitching from Seth Debity and Jordan Norton secured a 5-3 USA South victory over Averett University late Friday evening on MC's Scotland Yard.
Maryville set the pace right out of the gate sending three runs home in the first inning. A two-RBI single to right-center field by Zack Blonder drove in Logan Jenkins and Andrew Henry. Tyler Bigler scored Blonder with a solid single to the opposite field giving the Scots a 3-0 advantage.
Averett tallied a run in the third inning when Dallas Smithers (4-for-4 on the day) doubled down the left field line scoring Noah Greenblatt.
The Cougars tied the game in the fourth inning when Billy McLaughlin scored on a Trey Wall single up the middle. With runners on the corner, Drew Evan stole home to make the score 3-3.
MC's Lawler recorded the eventual game-winning hit when he doubled to left-center field in the bottom of the fourth scoring Tyler Bigler.
The Scots plated an insurance run in the eighth inning when Blonder scored from second on a Lawler single to left field.
Averett (8-9, 1-3 USA South) had a solid pitching performance from T.J. Viracola. The right-hander went eight innings scattering 13 hits while striking out eight.
Maryville (15-3, 6-1 USA South) was paced on the mound by Seth Debity. The senior went seven innings allowing nine hits while striking out eight to move his mound record to 5-1 on the season. Jordan Norton earned his first save of the season after tossing a pair of no-hit innings striking out three Cougars.
MC's 13-hit attack was paced by Lawler (2-for-4), Andrew Henry (2-for-4), Tyler Bigler (2-for-2), Logan Jenkins (3-for-4), and Zack Blonder (3-for-4).
The tough USA South series continues on Saturday with a double header beginning at 1:00 on MC's Scotland Yard.
