Box Score The No. 23 Maryville College Scots got off to a quick start, but it was Chris Ervin's RBI in the top of the night that helped lift MC to a 12-8 win over the Sewanee Tigers in 11 innings.
Maryville scored seven runs throughout the first three innings, before Sewanee would fire back with eight over the next four to take an 8-7 lead.
Ervin would belt a shot to short, scoring Mackenzie Jackson on the play to send the game to extras. There, Maryville would find four 11th-inning runs to secure the key regional victory, 12-8.
The Scots got the scoring started in the top of the first, as Andrew Henry scored off a Johnny Carpenter sacrifice fly for Maryville to lead 1-0.
In the second, the Scots looked to take control, plating five runs in the inning. Clifton Dempsey found a two-RBI single, scoring Greg Vourloumis and Ervin, before Logan Jenkins scored Evan Ezell. Zack Blonder would reach on an error, while Logan Jenkins and Henry each scored on the play to take a 6-0 advantage to the third inning.
The Scots looked to dominate, adding an extra run in the top of the third. Maryville executed the double steal to perfection, as Dempsey stole second. Vourloumis took home plate, as Maryville looked in control, 7-0.
The Tigers would storm back, however, plating five runs on six hits in the bottom of the fourth. Drew Mancuso had a two-RBI single to score Tony Dykes and Jackson Cooper, before Beau Allen would score Mancuso on a single to right. Trey Akins added a two-RBI single, as Allen and Derek Hullings scored. Going to the fifth, Maryville led by only two, 7-5.
Sewanee would take control in the bottom of the seventh, plating three runs on two hits. Mancuso cleared the bags with a three-RBI double, scoring Dykes, Coper and Akins. Maryville would go to the final inning, trailing 8-7, before Ervin's heroics would knot the game at 8-all and force extra innings.
Ervin would again add his heroics in the top of the 11th, as he used a two-RBI single to break the scoring silence. Jackson and Michael Hawks scored, before Robbie Young used an RBI single to score Zack Blonder. Patrick Messinger would reach on a fielder's choice, as Dan Oaklief was able to score for the final margin, 12-8.
The Scots used 11 pitchers in the 11-inning game, as Joe Jones picked up the victory on the mound.
Maryville (17-4) picked up 15 hits, as Blonder led the way with a 3-for-7 effort. Henry went 2-for-6 with two runs scored, while Young went 2-for-7. Ervin went 1-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored.
For Sewanee, it was Mancuso that led the way. The first baseman went 3-for-4 with five RBI and one run scored.
Maryvill will travel to Ferrum, Va. to face off with the Panthers of Ferrum College on Friday night for a USA South weekend series.
