Box Score The Maryville College Scots jumped out to an early 6-0 lead but fell to the No. 7 Emory University Eagles 7-6 after a six-run sixth inning was followed by a walk-off single in the ninth.
Maryville's Johnny Carpenter, hitting .305 on the season, led off the second inning with an infield single. The speedy outfielder stole second base and eventually stole third base before darting home on a passed ball on Emory's backstop.
The Scots tacked on a run in the third when Zach Blonder, hitting .398 on the season, drilled a double down the left field line. Chris Ervin deposited a base hit bunt before Carpenter earned an RBI with a groundout scoring Blonder.
MC posted a trio of runs on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning. Andrew Henry placed an RBI single up the middle with two outs scoring Jacob Frost. Blonder stepped to the plate and stroked a double down the left field line scoring and Logan Jenkins who earlier singled up the middle.
The Scots went up 6-0 in the fifth when Carpenter singled up the middle and later stole third base, his third base theft of the day. Jacob Frost got on base with an error by the Eagle's shortstop allowing Carpenter to score.
The Bottom of the sixth proved costly for Maryville. The Eagles put together four hits and took advantage of three walks to post six runs to even the score 6-6. Philip Maldari placed an RBI single before Chris Young belted a sacrifice fly making the score 6-2. Wilson Morgan doubled in a pair of runs before a passed ball scored David Coble. Emory evened the score with a Brian Hernandez sacrifice fly to right field before the sixth inning closed.
Emory chased MC starter Jeremy Ibarra after the senior right hander tossed 4.1 innings surrendering five earned runs on four hits and four walks.
The Eagles looked to pull away in the eighth when MC reliever Joe Jones walked a pair and hit Chris Slivka, who homered twice yesterday. Jones induced a lazy fly ball before Clifton Dempsey snagged a line drive to double up Philip Maldari to end the threat.
The No. 7 Eagles earned the hard fought victory when Coble doubled with one out and MC head coach Cody Church decided to intentionally walk Morgan to force a potential double play. Emory's Brian Hernandez tallied his 35th RBI of the season with a walk-off single to left field scoring Coble for the 7-6 win.
Joe Jones (4-2) suffered the loss on the mound after 3.1 innings of relief. The junior right-hander struck out three while allowing three hits and only one earned run. Emory's Kyle Monk (2-3) earned the win in relief with 1.1 inning of scoreless relief. The win lifts the Eagle's overall record to 23-7 on the season.
Maryville's 10-hit offensive attack was paced by Andrew Henry (2-4), Zack Blonder (2-5), Chris Ervin (2-5), and Johnny Carpenter (2-5).
The Scots (21-11) will host Emory & Henry at 4:00 on Monday and travel to Berry College on Tuesday. MC will host Johnson University on Wednesday for their last home challenge on Scotland Yard before traveling to LaGrange, Georgia this weekend for a three-game USA South series.
