Scots fall to Sewanee 2-0 in season opener

Box Score

The Maryville College women's soccer team dropped their season opener on Thursday evening to The University of the South-Sewanee by the score of 2-0 on MC's campus pitch.

For the first 19 minutes of the challenge, Sewanee maintained a consistent attack on MC's goal. At the 25:50 mark in the first period, Sewanee's Tasha Saunders blasted the crossbar above the outstretched arms of Scots' keeper Mandy Marshall and Shelby Meckstroth gathered the rebound to find the back of the net for the eventual game winner. The first half ended with the Tigers out shooting Maryville 7-0.

Looking to extend their lead, Sewanee took a 2-0 lead in less than the first three minutes of the second period. Martha Dinwiddle found Savannah Williams in the center of MC's defense and Williams pushed her first goal of the season into the lower left of the goal.

The Tigers (1-0) out shot MC 10-4 on the evening with Katie Morrison, Shelby Meckstroth, and Savannah Williams each taking a pair of shots on MC's Marshall. Marshall recorded seven saves during the loss in net for the Scots. Sewanee's Samantha Bourgeois earned the shutout in net turning away each of Maryville's two shots on goal. Maryville's only shots on goal were taken by Natasha Enrique and Kaitlyn Kennedy.

Maryville (0-1) will look to rebound on September 10 in Fredericksburg, Virginia as they challenge Randolph-Macon and Mary Washington in a tournament on the Mary Washington campus.
