Heffner tosses gem, Scots split with Highlanders

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Maryville College baseball team moved to 3-3 on the season after a double-header split with MacMurray College. The Scots defeated the highlanders 6-1 in the series opener before galling 8-4 in the night cap on MC's Scotland Yard.

In the first challenge, Maryville's Evan Heffner struck out seven in his first collegiate complete game. The left-hander scattered only four hits while not allowing an earned run.

Trailing 1-0 on an unearned run, Maryville did their damage in the fifth inning. The Scots led off the inning with three consecutive doubles by Alden Wright, Joey Tomlinson, and Brendan Lawler. MC's 2-1 lead was expanded with a Patrick Messinger RBI single up the middle. Lead-off hitter Derek Hurt tripled Messinger home before Bryce Redaja singled home Hurt to make the score 5-1. MC tacked on an insurance run in the seventh with Johnny Carpenter tripled home Caleb Adams who had earlier doubled.

Maryville's 10-hit team attack was paced by Carpenter and Joey Tomlinson who each went 2-for-4.

During the second game of the twin bill, MacMurray earned their first win of the season after taking advantage of a trio of Scots' miscues.

The Scots had a 3-0 lead in the third after a bases loaded walk to Derek Hurt scored Brendan Lawler. Andrew Henry singled up the middle scoring Logan Hayes and Eric Hart.

The Highlanders took the lead in the fifth inning on a two-out, bases loaded error allowing all three runners to score.

MC tied the game 4-4 on an infield fielder's choice by Alden Wright in the bottom of the fifth.

MacMurray pulled away in the sixth when Collin Antoine deposited a two-out homerun over the right-field wall to make the score 7-4. They added their final run in the seventh on a Brett Mammenga sacrifice fly.

Highlander hurler Ryan Meddows earned the win in relief after striking out six Scots and scattering only four hits over six innings of work.

MC's Anthony Rodriguez was strong over five innings allowing only one earned run on four hits while striking out five. Freshman Zach Messinger suffered the loss allowing no earned runs in relief.

Maryville's Andrew Henry paced the offense with three of the Scots' seven team hits. Henry went 3-for-5 with a run scored and a pair of RBI.

The final game of the series will take place on Sunday with a 1:00 first-pitch slated on MC's Scotland Yard.
