Hollingsworth, Johnson, Carpenter not enough against Hawks' big innings

Box Score

Maryville College dropped the series to Huntingdon College on Sunday afternoon, as the Hawks use four big innings to defeat the Scots, 15-9.

The trio of Hayden Hollingsworth, Drew Johnson and Johnny Carpenter went a combined 7-for-14 with seven RBI and four runs to lead Maryville.

Hollingsworth led the way in the loss with a 2-for-5 day, as he had three RBI and a pair of runs. Johnson was 3-for-5, while Carpenter went 2-for-4. Both added a pair of RBI and a run each on the afternoon.

However, three errors would prove costly, as the Hawks would score five unearned runs on the day.

A trio of RBI in the bottom of the first would score three runs for Huntingdon in the bottom of the first before Taylor Fought's three-run shot in the bottom of the second would give Huntingdon a 6-0 lead after two innings.

Maryville would plate their first run of the game in the top of the fourth as Johnson would score Andrew Henry from third. Going to the bottom of the fourth, Maryville trailed 6-1.

Huntingdon would go on a flurry, however, after a Maryville error. Will Cosby scored on a bunt throwing error, before Corey Lowe added a two-RBI single through the right side. Lowe would score on a wild pitch, giving Huntingdon a 10-1 lead through four innings.

A two-RBI triple to left-center from Hollingsworth scored Bryce Redaja and Patrick Messinger in the top of the fifth. Hollingsworth would score soon after on a wild pitch for a 10-4 score.

Carpenter added an RBI triple to center to score Johnson starting off the eighth, as Gavin Dooley scored Carpenter on a sacrifice fly to right. Going to the bottom of the eighth, Maryville had cut Huntingdon's lead to four, 10-6.

The Hawks would add their biggest inning of the afternoon in the bottom of the eight, however, scoring five runs. A pair of errors scored two runs for Huntingdon, before Josh Jackson had an RBI single to left. Fought would added a two-RBI single up the middle, as each of the five runs ranked unearned for the Hawks. They would take a 15-6 lead going to the final inning.

Maryville would rally, scoring three in the top of the ninth. An RBI single from Hollingsworth scored Mackenzie Jackson, before Redaja was plated with a Johnson RBI single. Carpenter added a sacrifice fly to center to score Hollingsworth for a 15-9 final.

Along with the trio of Hollingsworth, Johnson and Carpenter, Redaja was 2-for-4 with two runs. Henry went 3-for-4 with a run, as Dooley went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Messinger and Jackson each added runs for Maryville.

For Huntingdon, it was all Fought. He went 4-for-6 with five RBI and two runs scored for the Hawks on the day.

Maryville will look next to face Otterbein College on Tuesday, March 28. The doubleheader is set to begin at 2 p.m. on Scotland Yard.
