McGee's relief, Redaja's blast allows MC to claim Covenant series 6-5

Maryville College junior left-handed pitcher Zach McGee tossed the final 4.1 innings allowing only one hit to helped the Scots to defeat Covenant College 6-5 on Saturday evening in Lookout Mountain, Georgia.

Before the King, North Carolina native had the opportunity to close the door, MC displayed a variety of resiliency throughout the contest.

Covenant took a 2-0 lead in their second at-bat. Forrest Hunter scored on a Julien Amorelli double to tally their first run. Amorelli would later score on a Trenton Nobles RBI single up the middle.

The host Scots went up 3-0 in the bottom of the third with an RBI single to right field.

MC began their come back in the fourth when catcher Eric Hart singled to center field scoring Alden Wright and Johnny Carpenter. After four innings the score was 3-2.

Maryville manufactured a pair of runs in the fifth. Bryce Redaja placed a perfect bunt towards the second baseman scoring Andrew Henry. With Carpenter on first and Redaja on third, Coach Cody Church called a successful double steal to plate Redaja and take the lead 4-3.

The lead was short-lived when Covenant's Joel Johnson connected for a 2-RBI double in the bottom of the fifth giving the Georgian Scots a 5-4 lead going into the sixth.

Mc would tie the game in their next at bat when shortstop Patrick Messinger laced a single to left field scoring pinch-runner Hayden Hollingsworth.

MC's Bryce Redaja stepped to the plate in the ninth and blasted his fifth homerun of the season well beyond the right field wall. His 14th RBI of the season gave McGee the opportunity to give MC their 7th win of the season.

In his 8th appearance of the season, McGee faced the final 14 Covenant hitters to earn his first win of the season.

Maryville's ten hit offensive attack featured the 3-for-5 effort of Andrew Henry. Redaja finished 2-for-5 with the game-winning RBI.

The win advances MC to 7-7 overall and 4-2 in USA South play. Covenant falls to 6-9 and 1-5 in league play.

MC will now prepare for a non-conference challenge on Monday at home against Oneonta State.
