Hawks, Big Bats lift Scots past Berea 14-2

Box Score

Behind the pitching performance of Michael Hawks and the power of Bryce Redaja, Johnny Carpenter, and Alden Wright the Maryville College diamondmen advanced to 18-15 on the season with a 14-2 run-rule victory over Berea College on Sunday afternoon on MC's Scotland Yard.

Hawks held the Mountaineer bats at bay with five innings of six hit ball allowing only a pair of runs while striking out a career-high seven hitters. One hit relief by Sean Holton and Logan Hayes closed the door to complete the non-conference weekend three-game sweep.

Maryville put up four runs in the first when Andrew Henry scored on a Johnny Carpenter Texas-leaguer. Another flair by Drew Johnson sent Carpenter home. Alden Wright sent Johnson across the plate with a two-run homerun off the left centerfield light post.

The Scots advanced to a 5-0 advantage in the third on an Alden Wright sacrifice fly that scored Henry who earlier walked.

MC jumped out to a 9-0 lead with five runs in the fourth. Hayden Hollingsworth tallied an RBI sacrifice fly before Andrew Henry singled up the middle to score McKenzie Jackson. With one out, Johnny Carpenter deposited a blast off the left field foul pole for a dinger scoring Henry and Redaja.

Berea got on the scoreboard in the fifth when Nathaniel Summey laced a two-out single up the middle to score Joshua Durbin.

The Scots added a trio of runs in the bottom of the fifth when left fielder Bryce Redaja crushed his third homerun of the weekend. The three-run blast was his league-leading 9th home run and his 31st RBI of the season.

The Mountaineers added a run in the sixth when Nicholas Bottoms stroked an RBI single scoring Ron Overstreet.

Maryville's final run was plated in the bottom of the sixth when Joey Tomlison led off the inning with a triple down the left field line before he darted homeward on an Eric Hart RBI groundout.

The Scots will travel to Emory, Virginia on Tuesday to challenge Emory & Henry College. They will return to Scotland Yard on Wednesday to host Centre College at 5:00 p.m.
