Scots defeat Wolves 3-0

Box Score

A pair of goals by freshman Bailey Sipos and a blast to the back of the net by Sarah Wickman pushed Maryville College's win streak to three after a 3-0 USA South victory over Wesleyan College (Ga.) on Saturday afternoon on MC's home pitch.

The Scots' offensive was daunting in the first half directing 18 shots. The Wolves had only one scoring threat on a through ball but MC defenders Alyssa Kral and Kelly Allen thwarted their advance and converted the opportunity to another MC offensive attack.

Maryville lit up the scoreboard early when Sarah Wickman gathered an assist from Lexie Hill following a corner kick after being pushed out of the box and blasted the eventual game-winner from 18-yards out into the upper left of the net. With only 1:27 off the clock the Scots led 1-0.

Just over three minutes later, a constant MC offensive attack found Hannah Clothier advancing through the box. A quick dish to Bailey Sipos and the freshman placed her eighth goal of the season with her right foot just past the outstretched arm of the Wolves' keeper.

On Maryville's fourth corner kick of the first-half, just around the 24th minute, Sipos saw a corner kick get pushed to the left of the box. She collectively gathered a lower body trap and did a one-time right-footer into the net for her ninth goal of the season.

At the intermission, Maryville maintained a 3-0 lead with 18 shots, nine on Wesleyan keeper Carlee Dykes.

In the second half, Maryville out-shot the Wolves 9-1, ending the challenge with a 27-1 shot differential.

Wesleyan had scoring runs at the 36th and 28th minute but MC defenders Kara Tubb, Sarah Wickman, and Miranda Lukas did not give the Wolves any open looks.

Sipos and Emilie Boone paced the Scots with 11 collective shots. Wickman, Meagan Eiselstein, and Shannon Reagan each had a trio of shots toward pay-dirt.

Rachel Taylor and Abbey Coleman earned the collective shutout in net, the fourth shutout for the Scots this season.

The win advances Maryville to 5-2-1 on the season and 2-0 in USA South action. The Wolves fall to 4-3 on the season and 0-1 in league play.

The Scots will host Ferrum College on Sunday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
