Second half surge lifts Emory past Maryville 3-1

Box Score

The Emory University women's soccer program snapped a Maryville College five-match winning streak with a trio of second-half goals defeating the Scots 3-1 in Atlanta, Georgia on Tuesday evening.

The Scots and Eagles battled to a scoreless tie in the first half with Emory displaying constant offensive pressure on MC's backline.

In the first 20 minutes, Maryville keeper Abbey Coleman and the talented backline of Miranda Lukas, Kelly Allen, Maggie Wilson, and Jenna Clothier thwarted six Emory shots, including a pair placed on goal. Maryville's lone shot was on goal by Shannon Reagan.

In the final 25 minutes before intermission, Emory tallied another six shots with Samantha Hilsee hitting the right post in the 26th minute before Caroline Kolski's blast was saved by MC's Coleman in the final minute of the half. Maryville's only shot on goal in the final 25 minutes was by senior Mackenzie Yaksic.

The Eagles came out of the break with a flurry of five shots in the first five minutes including a Madison Phaneuf shot stopped by MC's Coleman.

On Emory's 20th shot of the evening, in the 56th minute, Caroline Moore passed to Caroline Kolski who did a one-touch, heal flick to Madison Phaneuf. Phaneuf deposited her fourth goal of the season to give Emory University a 1-0 advantage.

MC got their third shot on goal in the 59th minute on a Bailey Sipos attack with a Danielle Staffin save.

In the 63rd minute, Maryville's Shannon Reagan directed her second shot on goal.

In the 76th minute, Emory's Caroline Moore crossed the top of the box right to left and placed a left-footed attack into the top center of the net past Coleman on the Eagle's 26th shot of the challenge.

Only a minute later Emory's Shivani Beall directed her fifth goal of the season to complete the scoring for the host Eagles.

In the 84th minute, Maryville's Shannon Reagan stole a backward pass and the junior hit the net from eight yards out for her fifth goal of the season making the score 3-1.

Emory finished with 30 total shots, 15 on goal. Maryville's Abbey Coleman turned away a dozen Eagle attacks but suffered the loss in net for the Scots.

The loss drops Maryville to 8-5 on the season while Emory advances to 8-4 with the victory.

Maryville will now prepare to host USA South rival Piedmont College on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
