Strong bench effort leads Scots past Methodist 93-67

The Maryville College men's basketball team used a 44-point scoring effort from their bench and a 69% shooting effort from the floor to defeat USA South rival Methodist University 93-67 in Fayetteville, North Carolina on Sunday afternoon.

 

The host Monarchs took an early 10-5 lead before back-to-back-to-back baskets by Emanuelle Garcia cut Maryville's deficit to 14-13 at the 15-minute mark.

 

The Scots took advantage of Methodist miscues early posting eight points off turnovers including a pair of buckets from Emier Bowman. As the first ten minutes came off the clock Danterrius Bray found Emier Bowman for a dunk giving MC a 23-21 advantage.

 

Maryville went on a 12-2 run following a Dante Hoppa layup at the 4:43 mark giving the Scots a ten-point lead (33-23).

 

The Monarchs fought back with a 10-2 run over the next three minutes before baskets by Bowman and Trevor Gaines-Perry closed the half with a 43-36 lead by Maryville.

 

At the break, Maryville countered Methodist's 51% shooting effort (16-for-31) with an amazing 70% effort from the floor (19-for-27). Kaleb Estes and Emier Bowman paced Maryville with 10 points on a collective 9-for-12 shooting effort while the Monarchs were led by Kaymon Mitchell and Sam Mingledoff each had 10 points.

 

The Scots broke open the second half with a 10-2 run that featured five different MC players scoring. Joshua Brooks tallied eight points over the first nine minutes of the final period giving MC a 63-51 lead at the 11:10 mark.

 

Maryville extended their lead to 17-points at the 10:20 mark following a Dante Hoppa three-pointer. MC entered the final five minutes leading 81-62 after a pair of baskets by Danterrius Bray. The Scots closed on an 11-5 run to preserve the 26-point league road victory.

 

Methodist (3-6, 2-1 USA South) was led by Kaymon Mitchell's 17 points. Dante Burden added 14 points while J'Quan Deal tossed in 13 points.

 

Maryville (3-4, 2-1 USA South) relied on Emier Bowman's 18 points on 8-of-9 shooting. Joshua Brooks added 15 points while Emanuelle Garcia dropped 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Dante Hoppa finished with 11 points while Kaleb Estes added 10 points off the bench.

 

The Scots will prepare to host Johnson University next Saturday, December 8th at 3:00 p.m.
