Box Score Four Scots' hurlers limited the hard-hitting lineup of Huntingdon College to only three hits and MC catcher Evan Ezell drove in a pair of runs to help Maryville College claim the USA South baseball series from the Hawks by the score of 4-1 on Saturday on MC's Scotland Yard.
Maryville starter Ricky Ward (2-0) allowed only one hit and one earned run over the first 5.1 innings of work to claim the mound victory. MC's stellar bullpen closed down the final 3.2 innings. Zach Messinger allowed a hit before Zach McGee went a pair of innings also allowing only a single base hit. Freshman right-hander Trevor Townsend came on for the final 1.2 innings striking out four of the six batters faced to earn his first collegiate save. Before the league challenge, Huntingdon came into the rubber-game of the series with a .332 team batting average.
The Scots got on the scoreboard in the first when Johnny Carpenter stole second base and advanced to third on an errant throw before Hayden Hollingsworth crossed home plate with a stolen base of his own.
In the 5th Maryville took advantage of a Huntingdon miscue. Patrick Messinger scored when Andrew Henry directed a shot to the third baseman and an errant throw plated an unearned run.
The Hawks cut the lead in half in the 6th when Corey Lowe tallied an unearned run when Taylor Fought singled to right center field off reliever Zach Messinger.
In the bottom of the sixth, Bryce Redaja doubled and Christian Poulsen singled and stole second to set the stage for Ezell. The Scots' senior catcher promptly laced a two-out single to right center field to score Redaja and Poulsen to make the score 4-1.
Huntingdon (11-8, 3-3 USA South) was paced offensively by Taylor Fought's 2-for-4 effort.
Maryville (17-3, 3-3 USA South) had Redaja and Poulsen each finishing 2-for-4 at the plate.
The Scots will prepare to travel to Emory & Henry College next Tuesday before going to LaGrange, Georgia next weekend to challenge LaGrange College in a USA South three-game series.
