Scots earn 23rd victory with 8-4 win over Berea to open USA South series

Box Score

Maryville College earned their 23rd win on Friday night, as the Scots downed USA South foe Berea College, 8-4.

The Scots' Hayden Hollingsworth went 2-for-5 with two RBI and a trio of runs scored, as Maryville's bullpen held off the Mountaineers.

Trevor Townsend earned the win to move to 2-0 on the season, as he pitched 3.1 innings without an earned run. He fanned five, while giving up just three hits.

Jerod Dickey earned the save with 1.2 innings of work, as he allowed just one hit with a pair of strikeouts. It was Dickey's third save on the season.

Maryville struck first in the bottom of the first inning. An Andrew Henry single and a Johnny Carpenter walk put runners on, before Jake Petersen singled to right to score Henry from second. Alden Wright followed that with an RBI single of his own to left to plate Carpenter, as the Scots led 2-0 going to the second.

MC would add a pair more in the next inning. Hayden Hollingsworth would reach on a fielder's choice, before the sophomore stole his 31st base of the season. Henry scored him with an RBI single to right, as Petersen's second RBI of the game came with a single up the middle. Henry scored on the play to make it 4-0 Maryville.

Berea retaliated in the fourth, however, scoring a trio. Back-to-back walks to start the inning put runners on, before a Ryan Blevins' sacrifice pushed them to scoring position. Ty Williams would deposit at two-RBI double to left-center, before T.C. Eads would trade places with him with an RBI double down the left-field line. The Mountaineers cut MC's lead to one, 4-3.

In the fifth, Berea would get a pair of runners into scoring position to threaten the Scots' advantage. Trevor Townsend would come in and close the door with a pair of strikeouts to keep Maryville in control.

That allowed Maryville to hang more in the sixth and lengthen the lead. A Mike Homan walk and an Evan Ezell bunt single put two on, before Patrick Messinger's sacrifice moved runners to scoring position. Hollingsworth would score both with a two-RBI single up the middle. Carpenter would score Hollingsworth with an RBI triple down the left-field line for a 7-3 Scots' advantage.

Williams would plate another Berea run in the top of the eighth. He doubled to left to score Nicholas Bot. The Mountaineers sent Ryan Blevins home, as he was hosed at the plate, Bryce Redaja to Messinger to Ezell. Ezell would catch Williams stealing third to end the inning with the Scots leading 7-4.

Hollingsworth would score in the bottom of the eighth for the Scots. The sophomore singled, before finding third on an error and a wild pitch. Henry walked, as Hollingsworth stole home – his 32nd steal of the year – to give Maryville an 8-4 lead.

Maryville College (24-5, 8-5 USA South) was led by Hollingsworth's effort, as Petersen followed suit with a 2-for-4, two RBI game. Henry was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs and an RBI, as Ezell was 1-for-2 with a run. Wright went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Carpenter was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI, as Homan added a run. Messinger also had a hit.

Berea (4-23, 0-12) saw Eads go 3-for-4 with an RBI, as Williams was 2-for-4 with a trio of RBI and a run scored.

The Scots will look next to a Saturday double header with the Mountaineers for Senior Day. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. on Scotland Yard.
