Scots fall 1-0 to No. 16 Lynchburg in season opener

Maryville College opened the 2018 season with a hard-fought loss to No. 16 Lynchburg College, 1-0, in the Lynchburg Invitational.

MC keeper Abbey Coleman was a force in the net, turning away eight shots against the Top-20 team.

The Scots were outshot 21-2, as Coleman allowed just one goal in more than 84 minutes in net.

Lynchburg was led by Caitlin Mertens. The forward posted 10 of the Hornets' 21 shots. She had four shots on goal, while adding the match's only goal

Kennedy Jakubek tallied the assist on Mertens' goal, as she had three shots of her own. Madalyn Amos also had three shots – each of those on goal.

Jenna Clothier and Miranda Lukas tallied the two shots for Maryville College in the loss.

Maryville will look next to Roanoke College. The Scots will take on the Maroons at 2 p.m. tomorrow, Sept. 2, to continue the Lynchburg Invitational.
