Box Score Maryville College faced off the N.C. Wesleyan College on Tuesday morning, as a late run and 56 points off the bench lifted the Battling Bishops over the Scots, 89-73.
MC's Felix Uadiale had a double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds, while Joshua Brooks and Brice Martin each scored in double figured. Trevor Gaines-Perry added a career high for the Scots in the loss.
Maryville never trailed in the opening half, depositing 43.9 percent of their shots. The Scots allowed just three turnovers, while outrebounding the Battling Bishops, 24-19. MC forced six N.C. Wesleyan turnovers and were able to pull down 11 offensive rebounds. The Scots turned both those opportunities into eight total points.
The Orange and Garnet held the advantage in the first half in part to a 7-0 run early on. Holding a 4-3 lead on jump shots by Uadiale and Martin, MC's seven-point rally extended their lead to 11-3. Kevin Chong had a dunk, while Uadiale added a pair of charity tosses. Chong would finish the run with a trey from Brooks.
Maryville extended that lead to 11 points at the 8:25 mark with a Uadiale jumper, 25-14. N.C. Wesleyan cut the Scots' lead to just five before the half, however, 42-37.
The Battling Bishops would use a 14-4 run, including their final shot of the first half, to gain their first lead in the opening five minutes of the second half. N.C. Wesleyan extended their lead to as many as six, 61-55, on an Isaiah Lewis jumper from Josh Covington.
Maryville rallied, however, scoring six straight with a Cam Gwyn trey to tie it at 61-all with 7:13 left. The two teams traded points, as N.C. Wesleyan extended the lead back to five.
A Uadiale lay-in with 4:14 made it 70-67, before the Bishops would end the game on a rally. They would outscore the Scots, 19-6, in the final four minutes for the 89-73 final score.
Maryville College (0-8, 0-3 USA South) was paced by Uadiale's double-double, as the freshman shot 9-of-11 from the floor. He added a 3-of-3 performance at the charity stripe, while collecting six offensive rebounds in his 11.
Brooks neared a double-double with 14 points and nine assists, as he added four rebounds. Martin posted 19 points, two rebounds, two steals and a block for the game.
Gaines-Perry posted a career-high nine points off the bench with a rebound and a steal. He shot 4-of-6 from the floor on the day. Chong added eight points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals, while Gwyn had five points off the bench. Nicholas Clifton added four points and a rebound, while Dalton Coleman had two points and four boards. Kordell Kah had five rebounds and two assists on the day.
Maryville shot 30-of-68 (44.1 percent) on the day, while adding five 3-pointers at a 25-percent clip. The outrebounded the Battling Bishops, 39-36.
N.C. Wesleyan College (4-4, 1-1) shot 52.4 percent (33-of-63), while adding nine treys. The Battling Bishops scored 20 of their 52 second-half points off 10 Maryville turnovers.
Damon McDowell led N.C. Wesleyan with 24 points off the bench, as he shot 10-of-13 from the floor. Garrett Phillips added 17 points off the pine, as the Battling Bishops totaled 56 of their 89 points off the bench.
AJ Frye had 12 points and five rebounds, while Mitch Layton had a double-double of 11 points and 10 boards.
Maryville College will have the Christmas break off, before traveling to Roanoke, Va. for the Cregger Invitational. MC will play Stockton on Sunday, Dec. 29 with a 2:00 p.m. tipoff.
