Box Score 2 The Maryville College baseball team split a doubleheader in their home opening series against the University of Lynchburg. The Hornets took the first challenge 2-0 before the Scots stormed back in the nightcap winning 9-1.
In the first game, Lynchburg's Garrett Jackson deposited a two-run home run just over the centerfield wall in the seventh inning to score the games only runs. The Hornet's Hunter Campbell scattered five hits over five starting innings, but Brandon Pond earned the mound victory shutting out the Scots in the final four innings allowing only four hits.
Maryville's Jordan Davis allowed only one hit over his four-inning start. Christian Poulsen suffered the tough-luck loss allowing only four hits over the final five innings. The duo combined for eight strikeouts.
Maryville's nine-hit attack was paced by Mike Homan (3-for-4) and Nelson Smith (3-for-4).
In the nightcap, left-hander Anthony Rodriguez held the Hornets to only four hits over five innings while the bullpen of Zach Messinger, Trevor Townsend, Nick McClendon, and Samuel Joiner allowed only one hit over the final four innings.
A four-run second inning gave the Scots an early advantage. A two-RBI single by Jack Shuttleworth and a sacrifice fly by Jake Petersen highlighted the scoring.
A double-steal by Peyton Sawyer and Mike Homan sent the Scots' fifth run to the plate before Joey Tomlinson laced an RBI single to left field scoring Sawyer in the fifth inning.
MC closed out their scoring in the eighth when Mike Homan doubled in Prater Knight before Sawyer jacked a two-RBI double scoring Homan and Petersen.
Peyton Sawyer paced the Scots' offense going 3-for-4 with a run scored and a pair of RBI.
Due to the poor forecast of weather on Sunday, the final game of the series has been canceled.
Maryville (4-2) will open USA South play on Friday, February 22 at Covenant College for a key league three-game series.
The Scots will return to Scotland Yard on Tuesday, February 26 against Emory 7 Henry College. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
