Eighth-inning rally lifts Scots over Lions, 3-1

Box Score

Maryville College stormed back from a 1-0 deficit, as the Scots scored three eighth-inning runs for a 3-1 victory of non-conference foe Mount St. Joseph University.

MC's dugout came alive in the eighth inning, as the Scots rallied for the victory.

Christian Poulsen went 2-for-4 four Maryville, while both Hayden Hollingsworth and Ryan Jones were 1-for-1. Hollingsworth scored a run, while Jones added an RBI.

Kolton Hicks tallied the game-winning RBI with a squeeze bunt.

Mount St. Joseph struck early in the first inning. Following a three-pitch strikeout to start the game, S Schaefer doubled down the left-field line. A pair of walks loaded the bags, before a fielding error allowed Schaefer to score from third. The unearned run gave the Lions a 1-0 lead early.

From that point on, the Scots left a total of eight runners stranded, including five in scoring position. However, in the bottom of the eighth, an energized dugout lit the Scots' bats on fire.

Back-to-back singles by Poulsen and Drew Johnson put runners on with no outs. Hollingsworth bunted a perfect ball down the third-base line, as it stayed fair to load the bases. Jones lofted an RBI single to no-man's land in right-center just over the second baseman to plate Poulsen for a 1-1 score.

The Scots weren't done there, as Hicks placed a perfect safety squeeze down the third base line, score Johnson to give Maryville a one run lead. Hollingsworth would find home three pitches later on a balk for a 3-1 advantage.

Samuel Joiner came on to earn his fourth save of the season, tallying his 18th and 19th strikeouts of the year. Zach Messinger earned the win on the mound in 2.0 innings of work – his first win of the 2019 campaign.

Maryville (13-10) saw Poulsen go 2-for-4 with a run, while Hollingsworth and Jones were both 1-for-1. Hicks was 1-for-3 with an RBI, as Eric Hart went 1-for-2. Johnson was 1-for-4 with a run, while Micah Tullia was 1-for-3.

Mount St. Joseph (5-7) was led by Schaefer's 3-for-4 effort, as he scored the Lions only run. He had a pair of doubles on the day, as he had three of Mount St. Joseph's five hits.

Maryville and the Lions will face off in game two of the series tomorrow, March 23, on Scotland Yard. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
