Box Score The Maryville College diamondmen earned their fourth straight victory with a 7-5 doubleheader sweep of MacMurray College on Saturday evening on MC's Scotland Yard.
Senior right-hander Zach Messinger advanced to 2-0 on the season after scattering five hits over seven innings. Messinger struck out five Highlanders without giving up and earned run. D.J. Cooper pitched out of trouble in the eighth allowing only one hit before Anthony Rodriguez earned his first save of the season with a hitless ninth.
Maryville got on the scoreboard in the second inning when Derek Hurt blasted his second home run of the season over the left-field wall. The Scots added a pair of runs in the same inning when Gabe Lopez tripled to left-centerfield scoring Ian Campbell and Jack Shuttleworth.
MacMurray tallied an unearned run in the fifth making the score 4-1.
The Scots posted a trio of runs in the seventh inning when Derek Hurt singled to left field scoring Kolton Hicks and Jimmy Meredith. MC scored their final run when Derek Hurt scampered across the plate on a Cody Gregory RBI single.
The Highlanders rallied in the eighth inning capitalizing on a trio of walks and a two-RBI single by Wyatt Logsdon. Connor Allen recorded a sacrifice fly before Maryville's Cooper closed the inning in relief.
Maryville's nine-hit offensive attack was paced by Derek Hurt (2-for-2, 2 Runs, 2 walks, 3 RBI), Cody Gregory (2-for-4, 1 RBI), and Jack Shuttleworth (2-for-4).
On the season, the Scots are hitting .317 as a team with a pitching staff posting a 2.25 team ERA limiting opponents to a .169 average.
The Scots will close out their three-game series with MacMurray on Sunday with a 1:00 first pitch slated on MC's Scotland Yard.
