Box Score The Covenant College Scots took advantage of a dozen Maryville College walks to capture the USA South series opener in Lookout Mountain, Georgia on Friday evening by the score of 12-11.
Covenant jumped out to a 5-0 advantage in the first three innings. Covenant took advantage of a two-out error to plate four unearned runs before Josh Harvey homered to right-center-field in the third.
Maryville rallied in the fifth with a trio of RBIs by Gabe Lopez, Derek Hurt, and Alden Wright.
In the sixth, MC gained the lead 6-5 on a Jimmy Meredith two-RBI opposite-field single and a Derek Hurt RBI single scoring Gabe Lopez.
The seventh inning saw Maryville post an 11-5 lead behind a 2-RBI single by Kolton Hicks and a double by Derek Hurt that plated a pair of Scots.
Maryville's six-run lead was short-lived as Covenant tied the game in the bottom of the inning. Six walks by MC hurlers combined with a Hunter Christian two-RBI double knotted the league challenge at 11-11.
Covenant earned the walk-off victory when Alex Gonzalez reached on a fielder's choice when MC could not turn a double-play allowing Harrison Adelgren, who led off the inning with a single up the middle, to score the winning run.
Maryville (5-2, 0-1 USA South) finished with a 14-hit offense attack paced by Derek Hurt's 3-for-5, 4 RBI effort. Jimmy Meredith, Alden Wright, Kendall Catlett, and Ian Campbell each posted a pair of hits. Gabe Lopez, Jimmy Meredith, and Kolton Hicks each finished with a pair of RBI.
Jordan Davis had another quality start scattering five-hits over six innings allowing only one earned run. Anthony Rodriguez suffered the loss in relief with a pair of innings of work allowing two hits and one earned runs while striking out three.
Maryville will challenge Covenant on Saturday during a USA South doubleheader beginning at noon in Lookout Mountain, Georgia.
