Covenant College used its second consecutive late-inning rally to defeat Maryville College on the baseball diamond by the score of 6-5 on Saturday afternoon.
Maryville took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Alden Wright homered over the left-centerfield fence.
Covenant answered with a pair of runs in their share of the second inning. An RBI single by Trevor Grapenthin and an RBI fielder's choice by Brett Kernodle put Covenant up 2-1.
Kolton Hicks scored Maryville's second run on a double play in the fourth and then Hicks' gave MC the lead in the sixth with an RBI groundout scoring Gabe Lopez.
Covenant fought back with a run in the sixth when Josh Harvey singled to right-centerfield scoring CJ Edmond.
Maryville took a 5-3 advantage into the ninth after Ian Campbell doubled in Matthew Petzelt in the seventh before Kolton Hicks dashed home on a wild pitch in the eighth.
In Covenant's final offensive opportunity, Trevor Grapethin score on a wild pitch before Alex Gonzalez blasted a two-run walk-off home run over the leftfield wall giving the host Scots a 6-5 come-from-behind win in the second game of the USA South series.
On the mound, Jacob Hanson suffered the loss in relief for Maryville. Zach Messinger scattered six hits over 5.1 innings of work allowing three earned runs while striking out five. Anthony Rodriguez tossed 2.2 innings of two-hit relief allowing an earned run.
Maryville's nine-hit offensive attack was paced by Alden Wright and Cody Gregory who each tallied a pair of hits. Kolton Hicks, Matthew Petzelt, and Ian Campbell each posted a double against the Scots' pitching staff.
MC (5-3, 0-2 USA South) will conclude their three-game series at Covenant in a late matchup on Saturday evening in Lookout Mountain, Georgia.
