Covenant College earned a USA South baseball sweep after defeating Maryville College 14-4 to conclude a key three-game series on Saturday evening.
Covenant took advantage of a 10-hit attack off four Maryville hurlers.
MC's Chris Arbuthnot (1-1) suffered the loss after surrendering four earned runs on five hits within the first three innings. MC's middle relief gave up five earned runs allowing a combined five walks and only one hit. Damian Lusby ate up the final four innings scattering four hits while striking out nine.
Maryville tallied 13 hits in the series finale challenge but capitalized only four times. Jimmy Meredith, Kolton Kicks, Alden Wright, and Kendall Catlett each posted a pair of hits with Wright blasting a double and Catlett legging out a triple. Wright, Catlett, and Jack Shuttleworth tallied Maryville's only three runs driven in.
The victory advances Covenant to 5-1 on the season and 3-0 in USA South action. The sweep drops Maryville to 5-4 on the season and 0-3 in league challenges.
Maryville will prepare to host Berry College on Tuesday, February 25th on MC's Scotland Yard. The first pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
