Box Score Maryville College Baseball gave up 12 walks and three hit batsmen on Tuesday night, as the Scots suffered their fourth-straight loss, 10-4, to Berry College.
MC put together an eighth-inning rally, but it wouldn't be enough as the two teams combined for eight errors.
Senior Derek Hurt led the Scots, posting a pair of the Orange and Garnet's six hits on the night. The center fielder went 2-for-3 with a run, while Cody Gregory went 1-for-1 with a run and a walk.
The Vikings got things started in the fourth inning, as a pair of MC errors would give Berry life. A pair of walks and an error loaded the bases, before Derrick Newman cleared the bases with a triple to right. That hit scored Zach Huie, Weston Bray and Quinn Smith, before a throwing error plated Newman. Zack Walch found an RBI single to left to score Wesley Maxey, making it 5-0 after four innings.
A walk and a hit batsman put a pair of runners on in the fifth for Berry. Maxey reached on a fielder's choice, before Huie scored via an errant throw on the play, making the score 6-0.
Maryville plated their first run in the bottom of the fifth, as Gregory and Jimmy Meredith punched back-to-back singles. Jack Shuttleworth reached on an error, while Gregory scored on the play for a 6-1 score through five innings.
A single and a pair of walks would again load the bases for the Vikings in the top of the sixth. A wild pitch scored Dalton Smith, before Newman used an RBI groundout to score Quinn Smith. A throwing error allowed another Berry run, as the Vikings took a 9-1 lead.
Berry made it a 10-1 game in the top of the eighth, as a walk, a hit batsman and a wild pitch put runners on second and third. Trevor Proctor earned the RBI with a single to short, scoring Evan Romeo.
A pair of errors in the bottom of the eighth aided the Scots in hanging three runs. A Hurt single and a Will Hubbell walk put runners on, before Peyton Milam reached on a fielding error. Hurt scored on the play, before a Ryan Jones' RBI single to center scored Hubbell from third. Gabe Lopez plated Milam, as he forced a fielding error to make the final score, 10-4.
Maryville (5-5) was paced by Hurt's 2-for-4 performance, while Gregory was 1-for-1. Both scored a run, while Jones went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Meredith was 1-for-2, while Kendall Catlett went 1-for-3. Hubbell and Milam each scored a run for MC.
Andrew Miller pitched a shutout ninth inning, needing just 10 pitches in the three-up, three-down inning. He added a strikeout on the mound.
Berry (5-3) was led by Newman who went 1-for-3 with four RBI and a run. Proctor was 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Quinn Smith, Bray and Huie combined for six runs on 0-for-7 efforts. The trio drew a combined seven walks, while Walch and Dalton Smith had two-hit nights for the Vikings.
Maryville will return to action with a weekend series against USA South Athletic Conference foes Huntingdon College. First pitch is slated for 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28, weather permitting.
