Davis' dominant delivery downs Huntingdon, 8-0, with complete-game shutout

Box Score

Maryville College's Jordan Davis delivered a complete-game shutout on Saturday afternoon, as the senior handed Huntingdon College its second loss of the 2020 season, 8-0.

Davis tossed a dominant complete-game, allowing just two hits with eight strikeouts against the Hawks. The Maryville, Tenn. native didn't allow a single hit across his final six innings of work to secure the shutout victory.

"He's the ultimate competitor," Head Coach Clint Helton said. "He's a bulldog, and he just didn't want to come out. He really saved our bullpen for the weekend, and that's what you want out of your number one."

The right-hander gave up just three walks and a hit batsman, as the Scots had one error on the afternoon. Davis moves to 2-1 on the year.

"That's crazy to think of somebody throwing that many pitches, but he didn't want to come out," Helton said. "He's a competitor, and he's a thrower. He wanted to throw. He kept the pressure off our bullpen, and it really puts us in a good spot going into tomorrow's double-header."

Saturday's victory snaps a four-game skid for MC, as the Orange and Garnet tallied its first USA South Athletic Conference victory under Helton with a pair of key offensive innings.

Maryville opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, as Gabe Lopez drew a hit-by-pitch. Derek Hurt doubled down the right-field line to put a pair of runners in scoring position, before Alden Wright flew out to second base. Lopez broke for home one the play, leaping over the tag of catcher Andrew Knight. Wright's infield sacrifice fly gave the Scots a 1-0 lead early.

Maryville would us a two-out rally in the bottom of the second to score five runs. A pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases for MC, before a pair of strikeouts left the Scots down to their final out. Lopez found a two-RBI single up the middle to score Kolton Hicks and Cody Gregory, before Hurt's two-RBI triple down the right-field line plated Lopez and Luke McLemore. Wright would find his second RBI of the afternoon with a single up the middle, giving MC a 6-0 lead through the first two innings.

Maryville would add two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for the 8-0 victory. Jimmy Meredith singled, before Hurt was hit-by-pitch and stole second to put runners in scoring position. Wright added his third and fourth RBI of the day with a single to center, scoring both for the eight-run final.

Maryville (6-5, 1-3 USA South) was led by Hurt who went 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs, while Wright was 2-for-3 with four RBI. Lopez went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.

Gregory was 2-for-3 with a run and a walk, while Meredith was 2-for-5 with a run. McLemore was 1-for-3 with a run and a walk, while Hicks scored a run.

Huntingdon (7-2, 3-1) saw their only hits of the day come from Colton Clark (1-for-4) and Tri Overby (1-for-3).

Maryville College will look to a double-header tomorrow to complete the three-game series with Huntingdon. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. on Scotland Yard.
