Deck's homer, Campbell's bat lead Scots past Hiram, 9-6

Box Score

Maryville College followed an 11-hit attack on Saturday afternoon to defeat Hiram College, 9-6, in game one of the non-conference double header.

The Scots' Courtney Deck went 3-for-5 with two RBI, two runs and an inside-the-park home run, while junior Taylor Campbell continued her tear with a 2-for-4 day with two RBI and two runs of her own. Campbell had a double and triple to lead the Scots past the Terriers.

The victory marks the third-straight win for MC, moving the Scots to 6-1 on the young season.

Maryville got things started in the bottom of the first inning to take an early lead. Christina White walked, before Deck managed a single to the pitcher to put two runners on. Both advanced on a groundout, before Campbell tripled to right. The two-RBI shot scored both runners, as Reid Ballard added an RBI with a single to left to score Campbell for a 3-0 lead early.

Errors proved costly in the top of the second, however, as Hiram quickly erased the Scots' lead. A hit-by-pitch and a pair of errors put two runners in scoring position, as Melissa Galindo's RBI single to center scored Avery Balurdi. An infield single loaded the bases, before Kaitlyn Hager drew a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to plate Kylie Perez. Victoria Garcia used an RBI groundout, before Giselle Bahena singled to third to score Galindo and Giselle Chavez. Megan Davis's RBI single scored Hager from third, giving the Terriers a 5-3 lead.

MC rallied in the bottom of the third, though, regaining the advantage. Campbell doubled to left-center to start the inning, before a walk and a hit-by-pitch would load the bases. Pinch runner Bailey Ensley scored on a wild pitch, before Amaya Goodloe and Allison Botts scored on a throwing error to make it 6-5, Maryville.

Chavez led the top of the fourth off with a double, before Garcia traded places with her. The RBI double knotted the game at 6-all.

Botts earned an RBI in the bottom of the fourth, scoring Taylor Campbell with a single through the left side to give MC a 7-6 lead.

A White single to lead off the bottom of the fifth was promptly followed by Deck's homer. The freshman laced a ball into the gap in left-center, as her speed narrowly beat the throw home. The two-RBI shot made the final, 9-6, in MC's favor.

Maryville (6-1) followed Deck and Campbell, as White went 1-for-3 with two runs and a walk. Goodloe was 2-for-3 with a run, while Ballard was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Botts went 1-for-2 with a run, an RBI and a pair of walks, as Ensley added a run for MC.

Hannah Bruce moved to 4-0, earning the win in relief. She pitched 5.1 innings, giving up just one earned run. The rookie struck out four, while giving up just four hits and a walk.

Hiram (1-4) was led by Chavez who went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs. Garcia was also 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI, as Hager and Galindo went 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI each.
