Box Score Scots Move into Second-Place Tie
BEREA, Ky. – Maryville took care of its midweek business in a 6-0 victory over Berea on Tuesday night.
Kelsey Green came off the bench to score her eighth and ninth goals of the season as the Scots dominated their northern neighbors. Maryville held possession for two-thirds of the game and outshot the host Mountaineers 36-9.
Hailey Cartt scored her third goal, Bailey Sipos her ninth and Green her first of the game in the opening 45 minutes for a 3-0 Maryville advantage. After the break, it was Sierra Lee with No. 5 on the season, Katie O'Brien her eighth and Green to finish it off in the 81st minute.
Green's third brace of the season gives her nine total goals, matching Sipos at the top of the team ledger with O'Brien close behind.
"It was a good, quick start for us," Maryville head coach Pepe Fernandez said. "We scored some very good goals, we got the shutout and every field player saw action. It was a good conference road win."
Scots goalkeeper Sophie Turner made two saves before giving way to Sydney Mahr over the final 20-plus minutes. Mahr was called upon to make one save. Maryville, meanwhile, forced 17 saves from Berea keeper Kyla Simmons.
Scots Shooting for Big Finish
Maryville improved to 9-6-2 overall and 5-2-0 in the USA South with Tuesday night's win. Berea dropped to 5-12-0 and 2-5-0.
The Scots moved into a second-place tie with Piedmont, which has a game in hand and plays tomorrow night. Piedmont has games remaining against the bottom two teams in Wesleyan and Agnes Scott, so it's the Lions in the driver's seat for a division title.
But Maryville still has hopes of finishing second. The Scots need to knock off LaGrange, which is 5-5-1 overall and 3-3-1 in conference. Then they need Covenant to drop points Saturday at Huntingdon.
If that happens, Maryville jumps into second place and would host a USA South tournament quarterfinal match Oct. 30 against the third-place team from the Eastern Division. If the Scots finish third, they would be on the road that Saturday at the No. 2 team from the East.
Saturday's Homecoming festivities begin at approximately 1:30 p.m. The match kicks off at 2 p.m.
