Box Score Ian Campbell's first home run of the season wasn't enough on Wednesday afternoon, as a four-run eighth inning for Berry College lifted the Vikings over Maryville College, 5-4.
Maryville produced a seven-hit attack on the day, as five of those hits split between Campbell and Jimmy Meredith.
Campbell went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs, while Meredith was 3-for-5.
Maryville College (0-3) struck first in the bottom of the second inning. Will Hubbell was hit-by-pitch, before a pair of wild pitches moved him to third. Matthew Turner earned the RBI with the Scots' first hit – a single through the right side – to give MC a 1-0 lead early.
Berry College (5-0) got that run back in the top of the third with on a Maryville error. Justin Carr walked, as a groundout moved him to second. Zack Walch beat out a bunt single down the third-base line, as the throw sailed wide. Carr scored on the errant throw, knotting the game at 1-all.
The Scots regained the lead again in the bottom of the inning. MC loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a Meredith single, before Eric Hartless earned the RBI with a sacrifice fly to right. After three innings, Maryville led 2-1.
The Scots extended their lead in the bottom of the seventh, as Jack Shuttleworth singled to left. Campbell followed that with a two-run blast that bounced over the left field fence for a 4-1 MC lead.
A four-run top of the eighth, however, would allow the lead to change hands. Back-to-back singles by Walker Payton and Dalton Smith put runners on for the Vikings, as a wild pitch moved them to scoring position. Walch tallied the RBI with a single down the left-field line to score Payton. A single and a fielder's choice scored Smith, as Berry loaded the bases for the second time in the inning. Nick Brunswick laced a two-RBI single to center, scoring Tyler Calvert and Walch to give Berry a 5-4 lead.
Maryville would threaten in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases. Berry was able to force a pop out to end the game, 5-4.
Shuttleworth followed Meredith's and Campbell's performances with a 1-for-3 afternoon, as he added a run. Turner also went 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Hubbell added a run. Hartless also had an RBI.
For Berry, it was Walch who went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Calvert was 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while Brunswick was 1-for-1 with a pair of RBI.
Maryville College will look to the weekend, as the Scots host Cairn University for a three-game series. The double header is set for Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
