Scots Open USA South Play With 11-0 Win

Box Score

Cartt, Green, O'Brien Combine for 6 Goals

MARYVILLE – Maryville College Women's Soccer opened USA South Athletic Conference play on Saturday, as the Scots defeated Wesleyan College (Ga.), 11-0.

The Scots found two goals each from Hailey Cartt, Kelsey Green and Katie O'Brien, while seven MC players found the scoring column.

"It's good," Head Coach Pepe Fernandez said. "You want to start conference play well. You've had two games where you scored a lot of goals on either side of playing a nationally-ranked opponent. I thought the reaction after the Emory game was very good. We came out and played with confidence today, and our goal scoring came from a lot of different people. Usually, you're counting on Bailey to score three or four. She didn't score today, but she played well. It was good to see a lot of people scoring."

Maryville got the scoring started early, posting a trio of goals in just 1:31.

O'Hara started the scoring at the 18-minute mark. She took a cross from Macy Lindsey, tapping in in from 5 yards out.

Just 50 seconds later, Hailey Cartt made it 2-0, as Bailey Sipos found her in the middle of the box. Cartt blasted a low shot past the keeper at 18:50.

Only 41 ticks later, Cartt did it again. Emilie Guigou fond her with a long cross, as she chipped it over the keeper for three quick goals.

"That's it," Fernandez said. "You jump on it. One of the things that some of the past teams have done for us here is that they've created an atmosphere at this field, that if we score first, they say, 'there we go again.' That's not a credit to just this team, but that's a credit to the history here. We were chewing at the bit to really stick the ball in the net. It's good to have a good week where you score 21 goals."

In the 29th minute, O'Brien found a goal on an Alex Smith assist, before she made it two in a row in the 35th minute, 5-0. O'Brien's second goal came on assists from Kristina Buckley and Ellie Filimonczuk.

Maryville added a sixth goal on in the 40th minute, as Delaney Muldoon collected her own rebound with an open net in front of her.

An own goal in the 42nd minute gave the Scots a 7-0 lead at the break.

Kelsey Green added back-to-back goals in the 48th and 57th minutes, one unassisted and another from O'Hara. Emilie Guigou and Filimonczuk added goals in the 63rd and 69th minutes for the 11-0 victory.

Maryville (4-4-2, 1-0-0 USA South) outshot Wesleyan (0-5-1, 0-1-0), 45-1. MC had 20 shots on goal, while Wesleyan had one. Keeper Sydney Mahr turned it away to preserve the shutout.

Maryville will continue its conference slate on Wednesday, Sept. 29. The Scots travel to Covenant College for a 7:00 p.m. first touch.
