Box Score Late Score the Difference in 1-0 Result
LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – Kailey Burrell's goal in the 80th minute was lone score of the game as Covenant knocked off Maryville 1-0 Wednesday night at Scotland Yard.
Covenant (5-4-1) with the victory jumps alone into first place in the USA South at 2-0-0. Maryville (4-5-2) falls to 1-1-0 in conference.
Burrell's goal came after a throw-in near the midfield line. Maryville got a head on the ball but then Hannah Rodehaver gathered it passed ahead to Burrell, who dribbled forward and suddenly found herself in open space.
It was still a 1-on-2 situation, but Burrell crossed the penalty box line and left-footed it past the Maryville defenders and over the outstretched arms of MC goalkeeper Sophie Turner.
Burrell attempted a game-high five shots, four of which were on goal. Maryville's Sierra Lee had four shot attempts and Hailey Cartt three.
Maryville outshot the home side 15-8. Shots on goal were 5-5, and corner kicks favored Covenant 3-2.
The defeat snapped Maryville's seven-match winning streak in the series against their Scots rivals. The last Covenant win against Maryville was on the same field by the same 1-0 score back in October 2016.
Maryville is back in action Saturday at home against Agnes Scott (0-8-1, 0-2-0 USA South), which lost 4-1 at home Wednesday night to LaGrange. Start time is 2 p.m. from the MC Soccer Complex.
