Box Score Vinyard Tallie's Game-Winner
MARYVILLE – Maryville College men's soccer fought off a Saturday loss to knock off Shenandoah University 3-1 in the finale of the Turk Emekli Classic in Washington, D.C.
Goals by Noah Putman and Austin Vinyard in the first half was capped by a William Bryan second-half score in the Scots' victory.
"We played really well today," Head Coach Pepe Fernandez said. "We gave up another penalty kick, unfortunately – two penalty kicks in two games. You don't like that, but they were both good calls. We just made some mistakes there. We really controlled the entire second half, and they scored some fantastic goals. It was really just a great team effort on the second day of the tournament."
Maryville scored first in the 13th minute, as Putman collected an Ndubueze Henry corner kick in front of the goal. His header sailed into the right corner, giving MC a 1-0 lead early.
A tripping foul in the box gave Shenandoah it's first true scoring opportunity of the match, as Cesar Orellana made it count in the 20th minute. His shot sailed low to the right just past a diving Mykal Manfred, 1-1.
Vinyard found the game-winner just 2:30 later. Henry lofted a high kick across the box from right to left, as Bryan headed it into the box. Vinyard collected the pass with a one-timer into the lower left corner, as both Bryan and Henry were credited with assists. Maryville led 2-1 at the break.
The Scots outpaced the Hornets, 10-11, on shots, as Maryville held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Bryan added an insurance goal in the 63rd minute, as he crossed over his defender in the box. The rookie drove to the middle of the box, placing a high shot over keeper Dylan Johnson for the 3-1 final.
The Scots finished the match with an 18-10 advantage on shots, as MC took 10 total corner kicks.
Three of Maryville's eight shots on frame hit their target for goals, as Vinyard had four shots. Bryan, Davis Clothier and Jason Betts added two shots each, while Henry led the way with two assists.
"He has really stepped his game up and played very, very well," Fernandez said of Henry. "He was nearly unstoppable today. He was probably fouled eight to 10 times today, and that was about the only way they were stopping him. He's scoring goals, he's getting assists, and working really hard. We're really happy with his play."
Manfred had four saves in net for MC on the afternoon.
Maryville will look next to face off with Berry College on Tuesday, Sept. 7. The match is slated to be played on the University of Tennessee's Regal Soccer Stadium with a 7:00 p.m. first touch.
