Senior Day Unfriendly to Scots

Box Score

Lopez, Nelson Each Hit Solo Home Runs

MARYVILLE – Piedmont rained on Maryville's Senior Day celebration with a 16-7 win over the Scots.

With the loss, Maryville is out of contention for a spot in the USA South Tournament. The Scots needed to win two games against the Lions in order to advance to the postseason.

In the first inning, both teams tacked on one run on one hit. An RBI single scored the first Piedmont runner and a leadoff solo home run from Gabe Lopez tied the game for Maryville.

The second inning was very similar for both teams. Each squad had only three batters come up to the plate, with one batter grounding out for each and another striking out.

SIx runs scored for the Lions in the top of the third. Three singles and a sacrifice bunt brought the runners in for the visiting team. The Scots got going and put up three runs in the inning thanks to miscues from the opposition. A wild pitch scored Matthew Petzelt, while an error at third sent Christian Carlton and Ian Campbell across home plate.

The run that ended up being the game-winning score came in the top of the fourth when Alex Gonzalez hit a solo home run for Piedmont. Another two runs came across for the Lions in both the fifth and sixth innings before they added four in a definitive ninth frame.

Maryville scored single runs in the sixth, seventh, and ninth innings. A Campbell RBI single tallied the run in the sixth and the senior scoring continued with a Nelson Smith solo home run in the seventh. The final Scot run scored after Jimmy Meredith reached on a fielder's choice and Smith came home.

Nic Mirabella moved to 3-3 on the season with his loss on Saturday. He struck out three batters in his 2 2/3 innings. He gave up three earned runs on three hits. Four other pitchers took the mound for Maryville with Jacob Kerr being the only pitcher for the Scots to allow no runs or hits.

Lopez and Smith each had a home run for Maryville. The other two RBIs for the Scots were driven in by Meredith and Campbell. A team-high two hits came for Smith, Meredith, Petzelt, and Campbell.

Maryville hosts its final game of the year tomorrow at Scotland Yard. The series finale against Piedmont is set for a 2 p.m. first pitch.
