MARYVILLE – The Scots lost Game 3 of their CCS opening weekend series against Belhaven 5-3 in extra innings. Maryville is now 0-3 in conference play to begin the inaugural season,
Like both ends of Saturday's doubleheader against the Blazers, Sunday's matchup proved to be a pitcher's duel throughout.
MC starting pitcher
Mitchell Grannan pitched a phenomenal game. He pitched a career-high six innings, allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out 10 batters. His 10 punchouts are both an individual career-high and a season-high for the Scots as a team. The sophomore from Chattanooga pitched out of a bases-loaded one-out jam in the sixth inning, striking out the final two batters to preserve his scoreless outing.
Both teams were held scoreless through the first 5 innings before Maryville finally pushed a run across the plate in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double from
Will Hubbell.
After Grannan exited the game, The Blazers scored in the seventh inning to tie the game at one run apiece.
Belhaven took the lead in the eighth on an RBI single from Nick Herron before Maryville answered back in the bottom half of the inning, scoring two runs and taking a 3-2 lead. After a sacrifice fly by
Jimmy Meredith tied it up, Hubble hit his second double of the game to take the lead heading into the ninth. The Senior designated hitter finished the game a team-high 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs, and a walk.
In the top of the ninth, Belhaven would tie the game 3-3, scoring on a two-out error to take the game to extra innings. The Blazers would eventually take the lead in the top of the 10th on a two-run double by Herron and they would hold that lead in the bottom half of the inning to complete the sweep over Maryville.
MC has a week off before returning to play on March 28, for a mid-week matchup against Sewanee in front of the home crowd at Scotland Yard. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
