MARYVILLE – After nine days off, Maryville returned to action Tuesday for a mid-week matchup against in-state rival Sewanee at Scotland Yard.
The Scots defeated Sewanee 11-1, ending the game in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double from
Jacob Johnston as the 10-run rule took effect. They have now defeated the Tigers in 18 straight dating back to 2007.
MC has won six games via the run rule and has scored 10 or more in eight of their 19 contests this season.
The Scots picked up 14 hits on their way to victory over the Tigers. They were led by
Gabriel Lopez who went 4-for-5 with two doubles, three RBIs and three runs scored. The senior left fielder also added a team-high two stolen bases, increasing his total to 10 on the season.
Maryville kicked off the scoring early in the contest, picking up two runs in the first inning and four in the third.
MC's first run was scored by Lopez, who led off the bottom half of the inning with a double, before moving to third on a lineout by Johnston. He then scored on a ground ball by
Zac Graham, who reached base on a throwing error by the Sewanee shortstop.
The Scots' offense exploded in the third inning, picking up four runs on four hits and a walk.
Christian Carlton kicked off the inning with an RBI double to right center, before coming around to score on an RBI single from
Ashton Whiteaker.
Max Bowers singled home a run and
Will Hubbell crossed the plate on a wild pitch to put the Scots up 5-0. Lopez hit his second double of the game, scoring Bowers, and giving MC a 6-0 lead heading into the fourth.
Maryville gave up its only run of the contest on a solo home run by Blake Pou in the top of the sixth, before retaliating for two more runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning.
Maryville used three pitchers to shut down the Tigers in the contest. By prearrangement, MC starting pitcher
Nic Mirabella earned the win despite pitching just three innings. The sophomore was dominant in his scheduled three-inning outing, giving up just one hit without allowing a run while striking out a season-high five batters.
Bryce Einstein pitched the next three innings, allowing one run on three hits and two walks while striking out three.
Brandon Schlabach pitched the final inning, striking out the side and lowering his season ERA to 1.69 (1 ER/5.1 IP).
The Scots are back in action Friday night for Game 1 of a three-game conference series at Huntingdon. This matchup marks the start of an eight-game road trip for MC before they return home on April 14. Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. Central.
