LaGRANGE, Ga. – Maryville overcame an early 6-0 deficit Wednesday night to defeat Berea 13-10 and move on to the double-elimination portion of the CCS Baseball Tournament.
After a hard-fought game that saw the Scots claw back during their final at-bat not once, but twice,
Ashton Whiteaker called game in the bottom of the 11th inning, hitting a walk-off no-doubt three-run home run to seal the Mountaineers fate.
Berea scored first in the contest, scoring six unanswered runs before the Scots put up a three-run inning of their own in the bottom of the third inning.
Maryville's scoring was kicked off by a back-to-back-to-back single, double, and triple. The triple came off the bat of
Colin Dunworth and drove in two runs. Dunworth would score on the next at-bat as
Gabriel Lopez hit a sacrifice fly to left field.
In the fourth inning,
Max Bowers smacked a two-run homer down the left-field line to make it 6-5 heading into the fifth.
Berea scored three more in the top of the fifth, extending its lead to 9-5.
MC immediately chopped that lead in half, scoring two runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth on RBI singles by Whiteaker and
Will Hubbell. An RBI groundout in the seventh inning by
Hunter Thaxton brought the Scots within one.
Before Whiteaker had the chance to win the game for his squad and keep their CCS championship dreams alive, MC had to overcome a one-run deficit in the bottom of the ninth.
The ninth-inning hero was Hubbell, who launched a one-out solo shot to tie the contest at nine runs apiece and send the Scots into extra innings. The blast was Hubbell's second of the season.
Hubbell led the Scots with three hits in the game while Whiteaker contributed a team-high four RBI, going 2-for-6 with the home run.
Maryville hit three home runs in the contest. This marks the for the first time since March 7, against Berry that the Scots have hit at least three long balls in a single game. In the matchup against Berry, they hit four home runs.
After Falling behind by 6-0 runs early in the game,
Mitchell Grannan, who is usually a starter for the Scots, entered the game in the sixth inning and pitched five innings of one-run ball, allowing just two hits and four walks while striking out eight batters.
Chris Arbuthnot ended up notching the win for Maryville, pitching a scoreless 11th inning, allowing just one hit, and striking out two Mountaineers.
