HIGH POINT, N.C. – Maryville went 1-1 on Day 2 of the Greensboro Invitational, completing a ninth-inning comeback to win 7-4 against Rochester in the morning before falling to host Greensboro 7-5 in Game 2.
The Scots scored one run in the eighth and four runs in the ninth to take down Rochester in Game 1. MC trailed 4-3 heading into the final inning and then scored all four runs in the inning with two outs.
Jacob Johnston delivered the tying and winning runs in the contest, poking a two-run single into right field to put the Scots ahead 5-4.
Reece Jordan and
Hunter Thaxton scored on the hit. Johnston finished the day hitting a combined 5-for-9 with three RBI and two runs scored.
Ashton Whiteaker drove in two insurance runs with a single to left field, putting the Scots 7-4 heading into the bottom of the inning. He finished Game 1 with a team-high three hits, tied with Johnston.
Xavier Resto picked up the win for the Scots, pitching 3 1/3 scoreless innings to close out the game. The Sophomore did not give up a hit, allowing just one base runner on a walk in the seventh inning.
Maryville struck first in Game 2 against Greensboro, scoring two runs in the third inning as
Zach Devries stole home and
Christian Carlton crossed the plate on an RBI single off the bat of
Jimmy Meredith.
The Pride scored one run apiece in the third, fourth and fifth innings, taking the lead 3-2 before Carlton smacked a two-RBI triple to left-center to put MC ahead 4-3. Devries and Max Bower came around to score on the knock.
An offensive explosion by Greensboro put them back ahead in the bottom of the seventh, scoring four runs on three hits and three walks, and putting the Pride ahead 7-4.
Carlton, Johnston and Meredith led the Scots offensively, picking up two hits apiece in the contest.
Cody Meier, Bowers and Thaxton also recorded knocks in Game 2.
Maryville has a day off on Monday before returning home to take on Roanoke Tuesday at Scotland Yard. The Scots and Maroons will battle for the fourth time this season with MC looking to take the series 3-1 with a victory. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
