MARYVILLE – A five-run outburst in the second inning proved to be the difference maker Wednesday night as Maryville downed Oberlin 8-5 here at Scotland Yard.
In just his second start in a Scots uniform,
Daniel Montana went 3-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI, and two runs scored. He also recorded his first stolen base of the season. The first baseman is now 5-for-8 in his two starts this season.
Colin Dunworth kicked off the scoring for MC in that big second inning, singling through the right side and driving in two runs. Montana then laced a double down the third baseline, bringing Dunworth around to score the third run of the inning.
The very next batter,
Max Bowers hit a double of his own to left field, as Montana barreled around third and slid in just ahead of the tag at home plate to put the Scots up 4-0. Bowers would later score on a wild pitch, making it 5-0 heading into the third.
The Yeomen scored two in the third to trim the lead down to three at 5-2.
Ashton Whiteaker wasted no time getting a run back in the bottom half of the frame though, blasting a solo home run over the left field wall to make it 6-2. The catcher leads the Scots with three long balls this season, just one away from the career-high four he hit in 2023.
Whiteaker scored a team-high three runs in the contest, going 1-for-2 with an RBI and three walks.
Moving ahead to the bottom of the fifth, Dunworth recorded his game-high third RBI, doubling to left center as Whiteaker crossed the plate for his third run of the game.
The Scots scored one more run in the sixth, making it 8-2 on an RBI-single from
Hunter Thaxton.
Tommy Musuras got the start for Maryville, working five frames of two-run ball to pick up his first win of the season. He allowed four runs and one walk while striking out two batters. The lefty lowered his season ERA to 4.42 (9 ER/18.1 IP) with his performance.
Chris Arbuthnot entered the game in the sixth, and pitched two perfect innings, sitting down the Yeomen 1-2-3 in both frames. His method of work was balanced as he recorded two strikeouts, two ground outs, and two flyouts in the contest.
Oberlin threatened in the eighth inning, scoring three runs on a three-run homer off the bat of Kyle Baxt, making it 8-5 heading into the ninth.
Any momentum the Yeomen had built after the home run disappeared as
Xavier Resto entered the game in the top of the ninth and struck out the side to earn his second save of the season.
Maryville looks to complete the sweep Thursday afternoon, when it faces off against Oberlin in Game 2 at Scotland yard. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
