HIGH POINT, N.C. – Maryville jumped out to a lead early but was unable to sustain it as they fell to Adrian 15-5 in eight innings in Game 1 of the Greensboro Invitational.
Christian Carlton got the Scots started with a lead-off solo home run to left field to put MC ahead 1-0. The blast marks his first of the season and his first since March 15, 2023, against Transylvania.
Just two batters later,
Ashton Whiteaker hit a two-run home run to push the Scots lead to 3-0. The catcher now has two home runs this season, with both coming in the last three games.
Adrian scored two runs in the second inning and then tied it up with two outs in the fourth. The Bulldogs threatened to take the lead then and there, but the weather didn't cooperate, and a weather delay was put in place.
The delay was long enough that the Scots opted to bring in a reliever and starting pitcher
Mitchell Grannan's day ended after pitching 3 2/3 innings, allowing just two hits and striking out five. With
Chris Arbuthnot on the bump following the restart, the Bulldogs picked up right where they left off with pinch-hitter Edward Wagner hitting a three-RBI double to put Adrian ahead 6-3.
Grannan was tagged with his first loss of the season. He allowed six runs in the contest, though just two were earned.
Adrian scored multiple runs in six of the eight innings in the contest, taking advantage of Maryville's four errors. Of the 15 runs scored, just five were earned.
Maryville picked up 10 hits, led by Whiteaker and
Jimmy Meredith with two each. Meredith has now recorded multiple hits in back-to-back games.
Reece Jordan went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in his first collegiate start.
MC picked up two more runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
Colin Dunworth recorded an RBI single in the fifth while
Reece Jordan scored on a throwing error in the sixth.
The Scots have the day off tomorrow but will head back to Truist Point on Sunday for a doubleheader against Rochester and Greensboro. First pitch against Rochester is scheduled for 11 a.m.
