Scots Capture Second Straight Series Victory

Offensive Explosion Leads MC to Big Wins over Berea at Home

MARYVILLE – Maryville scored 31 runs across two games Saturday afternoon, securing the series victory after downing Berea in both ends of a CCS twin bill at Scotland Yard.

The Scots took both games in run-rule victories, defeating the Mountaineers 16-2 in seven innings in Game 1 and 15-5 in eight innings in Game 2.

Before play began, Maryville Baseball honored the 50th anniversary of the 1974 baseball team, who, led by legendary head coach/Athletics Director Boydson Baird, became the first Scots team to earn an NCAA Division III Playoff berth.

Maryville starting pitchers Mitchell Grannan and Nic Mirabella both picked up wins in their respective starts, striking out a combined 22 batters in 11 2/3 innings pitched.

Grannan got the nod in Game 1, recording his third win of the season after pitching six innings of two run-ball. He allowed just four hits and three walks while striking out a season-high nine batters.

Mirabella improved to 2-2 with the victory, striking out an incredible 13 batters in 5 2/3 innings pitched. That's more than two batters per inning and good for 20.6 K/9. He allowed four runs on seven hits while walking four.

MC recorded 33 hits in the doubleheader, picking up 16 in Game 1 and 17 in the nightcap. These totals are good for their second and third most of the season, behind the 18 they picked up on March 2, against Allegheny.

While there were plenty of big hits in the contest, the biggest hit of the night came off the bat of Jimmy Meredith in the bottom of the seventh inning. With bases loaded and one out, the second baseman roped a two-RBI single into the outfield for his 200th career base hit.

Meredith, a fifth-year senior from Cape Coral, Florida, accomplished this milestone in his 157th career game. In his career, he is 200-for-610 (.328) with two home runs, 26 doubles, 108 RBIs and 123 runs scored. With 25 RBIs this season, he is just two away from tying his career high in that category of 27 from last season. In two games today, the righty hitter was 2-for-7 with three RBIs and three runs scored.

Danny Montana and Zac Graham both put together four-hit games in Game 1 and Game 2, respectively. Montana went 4-for-4 with a triple, two RBIs and a run scored while Graham went 4-for-5 with a home run, a double, three RBIs, and a walk.

Montana was 4-for-6 on the day, reaching base via hit-by-pitch in Game 2 and extending his on-base streak to nine games. During that nine-game stretch, he is 18-for-29 (.621) and has recorded multiple hits in seven games.

Graham went 6-for-8 across both games, recording his fourth home run of the season as well as his CCS-leading third triple. The third baseman has picked up multiple hits in four straight, going 10-for-16 with a double, a triple, and two home runs during that stretch.

Ashton Whiteaker hit his team-high fifth long ball of the 2024 season in the first inning of Game 1. The catcher went 3-for-9 with a home run, a double and five RBIs in the twin bill.

wrapping up the offensive outburst for Maryville, Zach Devries, Jacob Johnston, Max Bowers, Colin Dunworth, and Christian Carlton all recorded multi-hit performances in one or both ends of the doubleheader.

The Scots are back in action Sunday afternoon at Scotland Yard with a chance to complete their second-straight CCS sweep. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
