MARYVILLE – It was a bumpy start, but Maryville quickly righted the ship and cruised to a 10-4 victory Sunday afternoon against Huntingdon, securing the sweep against the CCS-foe here at Scotland Yard.
After the Hawks (14-11, 5-3 CCS) scored four runs in the first two innings and threatened with a runner on base in the fifth,
Austin Suttle came on in relief with no outs and shut down any momentum Huntingdon was hoping to build.
The junior right-hander closed out the game and picked up the win, pitching five scoreless frames, allowing just one hit while striking out a season-high five batters. The victory marks his first of the season and his first in over two years, with his last coming on March 15, 2022, against Oneonta.
The Cincinnati, Ohio natives' five innings pitched mark the longest relief outing for Maryville (14-11, 4-1 CCS) this season.
The Scots recorded runs in each of the first five innings, led by a three-run burst in the first frame. After both teams scored four in the first two innings, MC kept its foot on the gas, scoring the leading run on a sacrifice fly from
Max Bowers to take a 4-3 lead.
Reece Jordan scored on the play.
The Scots recorded double-digit hits for the fourth game in a row, picking up 11 hits apiece in each game of the series against the Hawks.
Jacob Johnston led way on Sunday, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Jimmy Meredith, Zach Graham, and
Daniel Montana followed with two hits apiece to round out the multi-hit performances for the Scots. The trio all finished with two RBIs each, tying for the team lead in the category.
Montana has hit safely in seven straight games, recording multiple hits in six of them. The first baseman has recorded two hits in each of his last four games. During his seven-game stretch, the righty is 14-for-23 (.609).
Lead-off hitter
Zach Devries picked up just one knock in Game 3 but also drew a walk and scored a team-high three runs. The Surry Community College transfer recorded two doubles and scored five runs in the series against the Hawks.
At 4-1 in league play, the Scots sit atop the CCS standings after three weekends of conference competition.
Maryville is back in action Tuesday afternoon for another matchup against future-CCS foe Asbury, this time on the road in Wilmore, Kentucky. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
