MARYVILLE – It took a while for the offense to get going, But Maryville scored in each of its final four times at bat to secure the 8-3 victory over Piedmont here at Scotland Yard Friday afternoon.
With the victory, Maryville has now earned its fifth straight Collegiate Conference of the South series victory. The only series they did not win in 2024, was a 1-1 split with Belhaven, with Game 3 being canceled due to weather.
Heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, Maryville was down 2-0 and had accumulated just two hits. The Scots then catapulted ahead of the Piedmont, picking up five straight hits and scoring four runs to go ahead 4-2.
Christian Carlton kicked it off with a single up the middle, followed by back-to-back knocks from
Colin Dunworth and
Max Bowers to load the bases.
Zach Devries drove in the tying run on a two-RBI double down the left-field line, before
Jacob Johnston doubled the Scots lead with a two-RBI single.
Dunworth led the Scots offensively, going 4-for-4 with a home run, a double, three RBIs and two runs scored. He knocked in one run on the two-bagger in the sixth inning while driving in two more on his third home run of the season in the eighth. His four hits on the day mark the first four-hit performance of his career.
Maryville recorded 12 hits on the day and has now recorded 14 games with double-digit knocks over its last 17 contests.
Aside from Dunworth, Bowers was the only other Scot with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Devries and Johnston followed behind the right fielder in RBIs, driving in two apiece.
Chris Arbuthnot picked up his team-high sixth win of the season, allowing one run on three hits across 4 1/3 innings while striking out one batter. He has now allowed one or fewer runs in 14 of his 15 appearances this season, lowering his ERA to 3.12 (9 ER/26.0 IP).
Nic Mirabella got the start for MC, pitching 4 2/3 innings, scattering seven hits and allowing two runs (earned) while striking out five.
combined, Mirabella and Arbuthnot did not walk a single batter. This is the first time this season, and the first time since April 12, 2018, against Ferrum that the Scots have accomplished that feat.
MC is back in action Saturday at noon for Game 3 against the Lions. Before the contest begins, the Scots will celebrate their Senior Day, honoring 14 players pregame. Festivities will begin at approximately 11:30 a.m.
