Scots Run Into the Record Books at CCS Championships

Maryville Men Earn Runner-Up Finish; Women Move Up Two Spots and Make History

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. — It was a record-breaking day for Maryville College Cross Country as both the men's and women's teams delivered standout performances at the 2025 Collegiate Conference of the South Championships. The men earned their first runner-up finish since 2008, while the women climbed two spots from last year to take third place, marking their best CCS finish in program history.

Men's Team – Conference Runner-Up & Record Breakers

The Scots' men entered the season ranked fourth in the conference, but on championship day, they exceeded every expectation — placing second overall and shattering multiple school records in the process.

Maryville turned in a team average time of 27:55, the fastest 8K average in program history and a massive improvement from last year's 29:39 mark. All seven Scots finished with either a personal or season best, showcasing the team's depth and unity.

Leading the charge was Tyler Tangel, who placed fourth overall to earn First Team All-Conference honors — Maryville's first top-nine conference finisher since 2018 and first First Team selection since 2017. He was followed closely by Adyn Elliott (9th), James LeNeve (11th), and Steve Cope (13th), who all secured Second Team All-Conference recognition. It's the first time since 2006 that four Scots have earned all-conference honors in the same year.

Senior Steve Cope was also named the CCS Sportsmanship Award winner, highlighting his leadership and consistency across his career.

"They brought the school record time down from 29:39 to 27:55 this year," head coach Kaitlyn Carringer-Adams said. "They learned how to pack run and be confident. I got to celebrate the growth of these young men and this program — both mean the world to me."

Senior Sam Cocchia capped his career with a personal best and reflected, "It was great to get second as a team when we were seeded fourth at the start of the season. In addition to finishing my collegiate career with a PR, and happy birthday to Paul!"

The Scots recorded a team average of 26:19, the fifth-fastest in school history, while five runners posted personal records on the day.

Megan Shinn led the way, clocking a 24:15.6 to finish fourth overall — the 10th-fastest 6K time in program history — and earning First Team All-Conference honors. Addison Goodwin followed in seventh place, joining Shinn on the First Team and marking the first time since 2020 that two Scots have earned First Team recognition at the same championship. Senior Madison Smith capped her collegiate career by earning the CCS Sportsmanship Award.
