Opening Day Dominance

Maryville Out Paces Fontbonne 24-2 in Doubleheader Action

MARYVILLE – First game jitters never arrived for the Scots as the defending CCS Champions blew past Fontbonne 15-1 in 7-inning run-ruled game one of a doubleheader with the Griffins. Game two went the full nine but threatened to be more of the same as the Scots took a first-inning 6-0 lead and eventually won 9-1.

Game One
Offensive explosions in the first two innings made the lead almost insurmountable. The first inning saw Zach Devries score on an RBI single from Frank Derner to start the scoring for Maryville. Collin Dunworth then tripled to the left-center field wall, scoring Derner and Ashton Whitaker to earn two RBI.

Dunworth then in the second inning hit a three-run homer to right field, extending the lead for the Scots to 9-0. The junior from Nolensville had six RBIs in the game, along with two hits and two runs scored in three at bats. He tacked on a hit and a run in the second game.

Maryville was consistent throughout, scoring at least one run in every inning, and multiple runs in four of seven.
Pitching for the Scots was elite, allowing only three hits and one (unearned) run. The winning pitcher was Nic Mirabella who pitched 5.2 innings and threw six strikeouts and only walked three of 22 batters faced.

Baseball Vs. Fontbonne

Game Two
Winning pitcher Kyle Timko threw four innings, striking out eight batters and walking only one. Timko faced 13 batters. Austin Suttle threw 3.1 innings striking out five batters and allowing only one earned run
Frank Derner doubled in the first inning to start the scoring for The Scots, scoring Jay Pichardo and Zach Devries on the hit. Hall then singled to right field and advanced to second on an error by the second baseman which allowed Dunworth and Derner to score. Devries then had his second at bat of the inning and had a two-RBI single that scored Brayden Evans and Matt Hall and advanced Reece Jordan to third to cap off the explosive inning at 6-0 Maryville.
Fontbonne scored their first and only run of the game in the eighth inning on an RBI single by Pruneau that scored Smith from second.

Coach Helton's Thoughts:
"It was a great day, opening day. I always say this, but it should be a national holiday, so just that in itself is exciting" Coach Clint Helton Said, "You know, you work, and you prepare all off-season for opening day and I feel like our guys stuck to the plan. They stayed disciplined so I was proud of how we did that.

"Zach (Devries) put together some great at bats, and (Ashton Whiteaker) 'Whit' just has the pop potential, so the threat of what those guys can do by just getting on base and doing their job is awesome. They stayed disciplined in their approach which is what we ask for."

Up Next
