Scots Split Doubleheader

Marville Suffers First Loss of Young Season, Falling to Oglethorpe 10-3

MARYVILLE – The Scots split their two games on Saturday, winning game one against Hanover 11-8 and falling to Oglethorpe 10-3

Game One

Starting pitcher Kyle Timko threw 5.2 innings, striking out an impressive 11 batters. He gave up five hits and three earned runs, proving to be the most effective pitcher for the Scots. Relief pitcher Xavier Resto pitched 2.1 innings, giving up three earned runs on two hits. Closer Mitchell Grannan pitched the top of the ninth to close the game for Maryville, throwing two strikeouts along the way. Timko is now 3-0 on the season as the Scots improved to 7-0.

Hanover took an early lead on Maryville, scoring two runs in the top of the first. The Scots were quick to answer as Ashton Whiteaker hit his second home run of the year, driving in Zach Devries to tie the game at two.

Hanover scored two more in the top of the second, and Maryville answered once more. Jordan Reece doubled, sending home Colin Dunworth. Devries also doubled, scoring Jordan to tie the ball game once again.

Codey Meier brought in Frank Derner and Ashton Whiteaker in the third on a single to left center. An error by the pitcher attempting to pick off Matt Hall at first resulted in Cody Meier scoring for the Scots, capping the inning for Maryville at a 7-4 advantage.

Hanover would regain a run in the fourth on a sac fly to center field. MC would go on to score three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 10-5 advantage. Derner singled to right field to score Jacob Johnston, Colin Dunworth singled and scored Derner, and Hall singled to third, scoring Dunworth.

The Panthers would try to make the game interesting in the eighth, scoring on a three-run homer by Gutzwille. 10-8 Scots. Maryville would add some insurance in the bottom of the inning on a single by Jordan to center field that scored Dunworth.

Granna would shut down the game and any hopes of a comeback from Hanover with his two strikeouts. He did walk a batter in the inning, but the runner was caught stealing for the second out.

Reece Jordan and Colin Dunworth were the most effective offensive players for the Scots, as Jordan brought home three runners and Dunworth scored three runs of his own.

Final Score Maryville 11, Hanover 8.

Game Two

A tale of two games. Oglethorpe took a two-run lead in the top of the first, like Hanover in the first game. Causey for the Stormy Petrels double to center field, scoring Pearcy and Krause.

Maryville was able to answer with scores of their own in the bottom of the first and second, as Frank Derner batted in Zach Devries on a single, and Codey Meier homered to tie it up after two.

From then on, it was all Oglethorpe. The Stormy Petrels scored five straight runs through the sixth inning to take a 7-2 lead, one that the Scots could not overcome.

MC was able to put across one more run in the bottom of the sixth, but Oglethorpe answered in the seventh, adding one, and in the top of the ninth, scoring two.

Final score Oglethorpe 10, Maryville 3.
