Baseball Finishes Invitational 2-2

Scots Defeat Hanover Twice, Lose Pair to Oglethorpe

MARYVILLE - The Scots achieved similar results on both days of the Scots Invitational, as Maryville took down Hanover 14-5 and fell to Oglethorpe 13-2.

Game One

A hot start gave Maryville the advantage they needed to dominate the Panthers. MC scored four runs in the bottom of the second thanks to singles by Reece Jordan and AJ Finco.

Colin Dunworth began the inning with a single that slow-hopped to the second baseman. Cody Meier walked, and Dunworth advanced to second on a wild pitch to give the Scots two runners with no outs. Matt Hall ground out to the pitcher to put Meier and Dunworth in scoring position. Reece Jordan singled to center field and scored Dunworth and Meier to give the Scots their first runs of the day.

Jordan then stole his fourth base of the year to get in scoring position with Zach DevrIes up to bad. Devires was walked, bringing up Dett Dettwiller. Dettwiller reached first on an error by the second baseman. The error also advanced Devries and Jordan to second and third. AJ Finco singled to right field, bringing home Jordan and Dettwiller to increase the Scots' lead to 4-0. Dettwiller was thrown out attempting at home on the play, ending the inning.

Hanover would score two runs in the top of the fourth on two doubles, bringing the score to 4-2 Scots heading into the bottom of the fourth.

The bottom of the fourth proved to be the difference in the game, with Maryville blasting eight runs on eight hits.

Jacob Johnston singled on a soft grounder to the shortstop to start the inning and stole second to reach scoring position. Reece Jordan was walked, giving the Scots two runners on base with no outs. Det Dettwiller drove in the runners on a single to center field. AJ Finco then singled, putting Dettwiller on second. Frank Derner blasted a home run over the left field wall and onto Honaker Field, scoring three runs to bring the score to 9-2 Maryville.

Caleb Jinks

Colin Dunworth hit his third triple of the year after the home run, setting up more scoring opportunities for the Scots. Cody Meier, Jacob Johnston, and Matt Hall would all single in their at-bats, scoring Dunworth, and loading the bases for Reece Jordan with only one out.

Jordan would hit a sac fly to deep right field, allowing Meier to score. Confusion in the infield by Hanover allowed Matt Hall to score on the throw to first to attempt to get Johnston out. Johnston would eventually be picked off on a run down between the first and second basemen to end the inning at 12-2 Maryville.

In the sixth and eighth innings, the Panthers would put three total runs on the board to shrink the deficit slightly.

In the eighth, Frank Derner would benefit from Hanover pitching mistakes, as he was walked to get on base, and then advanced to each consecutive base on three consecutive wild pitches, eventually scoring. Cody Meier would benefit similarly, as he was also walked, advanced to second on a passed ball, and took third on a wild pitch. He would go on to score on a sac fly by Jacob Johnston, which would end the scoring for the Scots at 14-5.

Kaden Wimsatt

The Scots used only two pitchers in the game. Starter Caleb Jinks pitched five full innings, allowing only two earned runs on four hits and striking out eight, an impressive performance. Reliever Kaden Wimsatt pitched the final four innings, earning the save.

Game Two

Maryville couldn't quite put it together against a solid Oglethorpe team either day, as the Scots fell to the Stormy Petrels 13-2.

The Scots did start off the scoring in the game on a double by Cody Meier that scored Colin Dunworth. Brayden Evans would score in the fifth inning, adding the only other run for Maryville in the game.

Austin Suttle

Oglethorpe would score 13 runs on 13 hits, as starter Austin Suttle threw 3.2 innings, giving up eight runs (six earned).

Next up

Maryville travels to Rome, Ga., for a midweek matchup against Berry. The Vikings are 8-5 on the season coming into the game after dropping a weekend series to Belhaven.
