MARYVILLE – Tyler Barrett placed second in the long jump and
Steve Cope landed a third-place result in the 3000m steeplechase to highlight Maryville's Day 1 effort at the 2025 Collegiate Conference of the South Track & Field Championships here Wednesday.
Maryville is fourth in the team race, trailing third-place Asbury 34 to 26. Piedmont leads with 90 points and Belhaven is second with 41. Huntingdon (22) and Covenant (21) are the teams behind Maryville.
Barrett leaped to a 6.56m distance to earn the long jump's silver medal for the second year in a row. Belhaven's Neal Terry repeated as CCS long jump champion with a leap of 7.06m that ranks as the 30th-best in Division III this year. For Cope, his time of 10:28.96 landed him his first All-CCS accolade. He finished 13 seconds behind winner Tucker Cox from Piedmont and five seconds behind Asbury's Daniel Kersey.
Cam Robinson just missed a medal but earned five points for the Scots with a fourth-place result in the hammer throw. Robinson tossed the hammer a personal-record distance of 40.19m.
Jaden Marlin in sixth at 37.92m and
Joshua Panetta in seventh at 37.30m also scored for the Scots.
Barrett also picked up point in the high jump and javelin with eighth-place results in both events. The senior cleared 1.71m in the high jump and then threw his javelin a PR of 39.75m. Marlin and Panetta posted season bests with their javelin throws, with Marlin placing 10th at 38.05m and Panetta 17th at 24.52m.
Nine Scots Advance to Thursday's Finals
In the racing preliminaries, Maryville qualified three student-athletes each into the 110m hurdles and 400m hurdles.
Teddy Orton,
John Siepert and
Ty Hylwa finished 1-2-3 in their heat to pave their way into the 110m hurdles. Orton's time was 15.86 seconds, with Siepert at 15.94 seconds and Hylwa with a PR time of 17.11 seconds.
In the 400m hurdles, Orton finished second in his heat with a clocking of 1:00.39, followed closely once again by Siepert at 1:01.94. The other heat saw Hylwa close with a season-best time of 1:03.73 to grab the eighth and final qualifying spot.
Barrett continued his strong first day by qualifying for the 100m dash with a season-best time of 11.25 seconds. Barrett finished third in his heat and teammate Torian Crenshaw placed fourth with a qualifying time of 11.35 seconds. Crenshaw also qualified for the 200m dash with a clocking of 23.24 seconds, good for third place in Heat 1.
James LeNeve clocked a school-record and PR time of 2:02.46 in the 800m preliminaries, just missing a finals spot with a ninth-place result.
Other PRs went to Zaiven Hart in the 100m dash with a time of 11.90 seconds;
Julian Martinez in the 400m prelims with a time of 56.38; and
Paul Kanios in the 3000m steeplechase, where he just missed the points by finishing ninth with a clocking of 11:30.21. Other season-best times went to
Wyatt Crider in the 400m prelims with a clocking of 58.04; and
Sam Cocchia (2:09.08) and Crider (2:15.65) in the 800m prelims.
Day 2 of the CCS Championships has been moved to a 9 a.m. start Thursday, with the rolling schedule in effect. That means events follow one after another to finish the meet before forecasted stormy weather arrives.
